Often when I am comparing boxers resumes in BoxRec I will go from one boxer to the next trough common opponent. For example if I wanted to go from Whyte to Parker I would go through Brian Minto since they both have boxed against him.

Today I wanted to check Ward and Charr and I realized that it is not so easy to do when the boxers are two weight classes apart.

This got me thinking...

What is the least amount of names to go from minimum weight to all the way up to heavyweight?

I did it by just by starting from minimum weight and taking the heaviest weight opponent that the boxer in question had fought. So I ended up with the following list.

Leroy Estrada
Vicente Mirabal
Juan Lopez
Israel Hidrogo
Wilner Soto
Javier Coronado
Manuel Largacha
Maxim Prodan
Krisztian Duka
Mate Kis
David Sipos
Szabolcs Sipos

That's 12 steps to go from minimum weight to heavy weight.

I guess the best lists would have names like Pacman and Roy Jones in it.

I bet the nerds at the history section could come up with something crazy. Something like "Fitzsimmons fought at minimum weight 9 years old and ended up in heavy"

So here is the challenge... How many names do you need?

I'm not sure if Manny ever fought any minimumweight opponents, but you can go from light flyweight to heavweight in just these steps:

Manny Pacquiao
Oscar de la Hoya
Bernard Hopkins
Antonio Tarver/RJJ

I can't claim to be a history nerd but Georges Carpentier did fight a guy who weighed 103lbs in 1909 before moving through the weights 'til he fought for the world heavyweight title in 1921! On the other hand the heaviest opponent he ever fought was "only" 197lbs, so it might be argued that you need an extra step (Carpentier-Dempsey-Willard for example) to get from him to a really "modern-sized" heavyweight.

He's the only guy (that I know of) that moved through almost all the weights that way so it might be worth just excluding him from the game anyway.

Wow interesting! Just the names on his boxing record are interesting. Young Snowball, in his debut, caused Carpenter's manager to throw in the sponge in round 4 in a 1910 fight. Carpentier fought twenty-two times in 1910. His only losses that year were to Snowball and Buck Shine. Buck Shine finished up with a career record of 120-102-34. Wow!

There seemed to be a lot more draws back then, did they not have judges back then and call draws everytime there wasn't a KO or very clear winner?

Buck Shine is a hell of a name by the way, is he from Texas?
