Jose Benavidez Jr. made a predictable but impressive comeback from getting shot Saturday night.

Benavidez beat Matthew Strode by technical knockout in the eighth and final round in a welterweight fight on the Gilberto Ramirez-Habib Ahmed undercard in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Phoenix’s Benavidez completely controlled the action before dropping Strode with a right uppercut with 59 seconds left in the eighth round.

Strode reached his feet, only to have Benavidez unload a barrage of unanswered punches that prompted referee Lee Rogers to step in and stop the bout at 2:21 of the eighth round.

Jesse Hart’s goal Saturday night was to become the first fighter to stop veteran Thomas Awimbono.

Not even Hart expected it to take just one minute and 28 seconds.

Hart caught Awimbono with a right uppercut that dropped the fighter from Ghana just 1:05 into their scheduled 10-round super middleweight match in Corpus Christi, Texas. Awimbono got up, but Hart hit him with another right hand that dropped him to his knees and caused referee Lee Rogers to wave an end to their brief bout.

Philadelphia’s Hart (23-1, 19 KOs) scored a first-round knockout in his first fight since suffering his lone loss – a close, 12-round, unanimous-decision defeat to WBO super middleweight champ Gilberto Ramirez on September 22 in Tucson, Arizona. Hart, 28, fought Saturday night on the undercard of Ramirez’s optional title defense against Ghana’s Habib Ahmed at American Bank Center.

The 37-year-old Awimbono (25-8-1, 21 KOs) lost a fourth straight fight.

Immediately before Hart’s fight, Teofimo Lopez, one of boxing’s top prospects, out-classed Juan Pablo Sanchez with his hand speed, power and athleticism on his way to an easy unanimous-decision victory in a six-round junior welterweight fight. Lopez won by big margins on all three scorecards (60-54, 60-54, 59-55).

Earlier Saturday night, 17-year-old super featherweight prospect Gabriel Flores Jr. needed just 2:31 to dispose of Alex Solorio in a fight that was scheduled for six rounds.

Flores (6-0, 5 KOs), of Stockton, California, landed several combinations during their short, one-sided fight. He stopped Mexico’s Solorio (4-3, 1 KO) with Solorio still standing because Solorio wasn’t throwing punches back at Flores.

Ancajas dominated and stopped his opponent in the 10th round.

I had it a shutout up until then. He also dropped Gonzalez in the 1st round.

Was supposed to do a RBR, but I fell asleep .. i got work in an hour. Too tired. Will watch it today.

Hey atleast Zurdo finally stopped an opponent. His first in like 7 bouts I think.

The referee let that beat down go on a few rounds too many.

Ahmed, for all intents and purposes, stopped trying to win by the 5th round.

I wondered why the ref let the fight continue when Ahmed was either reeling from one side of the ring to another or simply fled the oncoming Ramirez.

Ahmed looked like the happiest guy in the arena when the referee finally stepped in.

But apparently only after Ahmed's own corner was signaling that they wanted the fight halted.

It was really just a card to showcase Zurdo and Ancajas. Nothing very eventful happened.

SMW is pretty horrific at the moment. It's probably one of the top 5 weakest divisions currently. Zurdo likely beats everyone. There really is no one I'd favor over him at the moment.

zurdo might be the best but i can see him losing to a few as well. he really seems to lack that extra something to make him special.

He can be hit and he seems to plod along.

A great boxer with mobility would keep him lost and turning all night.

Very strong. Keeps coming. Looks so much bigger than most 168 pounders.

Excellent KO numbers but hasn't stopped many since winning the title.

I have no idea what kind of chin he has. Hasn't been truly tested. It's probably pretty good but we'll have to see if it's a rock.

Hart could whack but his overall talent level is questionable.

Zurdo could reign for a while but don't be surprised if he gets upset at any time. Ahmed didn't belong in a title fight.

Just another guy who could be sold because of his record...against weak opposition.

Ramirez must be a protected species how is he UNDEFEATED

I'm a massive fan of Ramirez, I think he's got the lot, I think he'd comfortably beat the other champs, Benavidez would be close but i'd strongly fancy Zurdo

how good do you think hart is? because that was very tough for zurdo

to me hes a good guy in not that great of division. he may be the best but theres a few guys i can see beating him. hopefully well get to see
