guys who are more effective than they look

who are some fighters who really dont look all that much but seem to get results beyond how good they look?

i was just posting about tony thompson in the thread for the new tournament, as he was in a tournament himself early on.
i dont know how this guy managed to do as much as he did. he didnt start boxing at all till he was 27, he had pretty much no amateur career, he was slow as sh!t, his technique was poor, he couldnt really punch all that hard either.

of course he was no amazing fighter, but he did beat solis, price x2, pretty solid euro level krasniqi, mo harris, derrick jefferson, still somewhat of a contender guinn, and gave wlad one of his tougher nights in there first fight. he was probably ahead of kubrat pulev going into the second half but was woefully out of shape and gassed bad.

watching him i really struggle to see how he managed to have the career he did.

another one for me is fedor chudinov. looks slow, kind of akward punch technique, not all that hard to hit, not a big punch, yet beat sturm (shouldve been 2x), beat the crap out of buglioni, and gave the seemingly far more gifted groves hell for 6 and broke his jaw. not that thats great but despite looking pretty dang limited to me hes clearly got something effective about him

First name that case into my head.

Looks like there’s nothing on his punches, but clearly deceiving as they cause damage and make a huge thud.

at an elite level id say froch too

was slow for that level, could be really technically crude, not all that hard to find, etc. but even aside from him having a good enginge and wearing down seemingly more skilled and faster fighters, there were fights were he was effective boxing and not really going to war or playing the long game. but even then he could look crude and slow but he still managed to keep landing

Though Froch wasn't quick, he has excellent timing on his shots, and very good punch accuracy, at his best, he didn't waste many shots, and also put plenty each and ever shot.

Obligatory Carlos Maussa mention. Also:

Ricky Burns. Hell of a career for someone who can look very ordinary.

Jermain Taylor. As someone on here (James?) once described him: slow feet, no left hook, limited combinations. Yet he beat middleweight Bernard Hopkins twice!

Me? Don't recall it, but possible.

He was seemingly pretty basic, jab and right cross mainly, but he was a very big MW. I do wonder whether cutting weight led to his relatively short prime. I remember seeing a tale of the tape once, and his dimensions were those of a LHW.

gabriel campillos another one for me. little power, not fast, stiff legged and upright, chinny. but some good results and got robbed vs cloud and shumenov.

Carlos Monzon is probably the best example I can think of.

Yep but probably the best ever in perhaps the deepest division in history.

Adam Kownacki.
Looks like they dragged him out of Pizza Hut all you can eat night, and put some gloves on him.
Soft, and doughy looking, like he spends his days in from of a computer screen in a basement at his mum's playing world of Warcraft (or whatever the kids are doing these days)

Lucas Browne maybe?
Not elite, but Chauncy Welliver did well for what he had.

Good call. George gets written off as just a powerhouse but he had a comprehensive skill set. He was very difficult to land a straight shot on and his jab is up there with the best.

Johnny Gonzalez had a decade of upsetting the odds. He was either brilliant or awful with nothing inbetween.

Humberto Soto. Had the habit of doing just enough to edge a round. Won many big fights and never looked spectacular.

Tyson Fury, if I didn't see it, I would have never believed it.
Andy Ruiz Jr
Ruslan Chagaev
Tony Bellew
Thomas Adamek
Facundo Nahuel Simal
Guillermo Jones
All are ranked (far) above what I expected when I saw their looks, size, or/and age.

I never saw Facundo Simal fight. Is he any good?

No, not at all, he's just a fat dwarf that got a good, but fairly untested chin and an amazing stamina for someone with his looks.

Paulie Malignaggi didn't look the type whatsoever, and the total lack of power didn't help, but proved he was hard as nails in the Cotto fight.

Obligatory John mcdermott mention. Not great, but good domestic operator.
