Isaac Chamberlain: "I wasn't myself"

Time for the same excuses..

Isaac Chamberlain concedes that he simply "wasn't himself" when he finally met Lawrence Okolie in the ring at The O2 last Saturday night.

Speaking to Sky Sports immediately after the cruiserweight contest, the 23-year-old reveals where he felt the fight was lost.

"Honestly, it was just different in there," Chamberlain began, "I wasn't 100% and wasn't myself in there, I'm not sure what happened."

"He was holding a lot and making it messy. When it sometimes looked like I was holding, the ref took a point of me straight away. He was holding for most of the fight and nothing was said.

"It was clearly a messy contest and once I had the point off I was on the back foot. I did want to let my hands go but he was like an octopus when holding me. He throws, doesn't land and then ties me up."

Despite the disappointing defeat, the Londoner is remaining positive.

"Of course I will take positives, I headlined The O2 at such a young age and, for that, I'm grateful.

"I can learn from this and work on my mistakes - then we go again.

"I would love to even face Okolie again at some point down the line if he stays at cruiserweight."

He got bullied about the ring. Credit to him for seeing it through to the end but it was an awful fight to watch. Anyone who chose to watch this over the WBSS series needs to have a word with themselves.

I believe Gass-Dorts started few minutes before #FakeBeef.. So I did flip over to #FakeBeef and saw the first 2 rounds, which were decent. It got boring. Even my mrs said it was shít. So I flipped over and watched the last 6 rounds of WBSS.

I had the Sky card on the iPad but I ended up mostly ignoring it and had rewatch it again the next day. Crap fight!

That's a disappointing response from Chamberlain. And it says a lot about the character of the man.

He's still young, he's got his whole career ahead of him. He got a good payday and there's a lot more money to be made and good opportunities out there for him.

Just goes to show this guy will always have an excuse when he loses. Lots of fighters do that.

Why? He isn't citing a reason just saying he wasn't finding his groove. Young prospect, bright lights it happens.

Why? It's disappointing because boxing also take places between the ears. Jim McDonnell recently said in a TalkSport interview that the sport of boxing is 85% mental preparations and 15% physical.

And coming out with statements such as he made does not fill me with confidence in his future going forward to be a top professional.

I watched the Sky card and recorded the Gassiev/Dorticos fight and watched in the morning. I really thought the Okolie/Chamberlain would be a proper scrap but never took off. I like Isaac so that was another pulling factor to watch the Sky fight live.

I've rewatched the Gassiev fight four times! Absolute classic!

To early for them both to headline a big show imo

to be honest maybe chambos just not that good. i mean he seemed to come from nowhere and really hadnt done anything at all. his best win was a decision over shopworn wadi camacho whose been stopped by kennedy and simons and iqbal

tbh i think the fight shows matchrooms ability. two novices, one like chambo really not done anything at all (okolie was at least an olympian) and yet made it into a pretty good sold fight. actual fight was steaming sh!t but thats down to the boxers.

Wasn't a big show. Just a big arena.

It could have been easily placed in Cardiff.. But Hearn so potential to sell them on their own. They did around 9,000 in ticket sales.. That's really good.

They'll go back to undercards now.

bang on, he was bullied bad, he was thrown about like a rag doll and tossed on the floor like nothing, looked like an older kid from a school beating up a younger kid. not being funny but maybe chamberlain should of put the nut on him a bit of flaring elbows or nasty low blow,to stop him mugging him off, and the strange thing is chamberlain got a point of first, which seemed unfair

At the time I was thinking Chamberlain should be wrapping the head on him etc... Not that I condone that but as a fighter you've got to do what needs done. He was out his depth from the start. Okolie needs better tests as well! He's a good fighter but he needs bigger tests!

how good is chamberlain anyway? like, im unsure of how to rate him or this win for okolie. okolie showed hes better but how far do we move him up?

because chambo was pretty much off my radar till this fight started getting talked up and even then he hadnt really done anything beyond english or maybe area level.

do chambo above ppl like craig kennedy? or even iqbal? whats his long term potential

i dont rate both okolie or isaac personally , at the moment. i thought Tommy McCarthy had something about him but he lost to Matty Askin in British irish cruiser weights

McCarthy has terrible footwork. Askin made him look SLOOOW
