Ruiz has been out since the Parker fight, and looking to come back busy this year.
How will his first outing go?

I only started this thread because I know nothing about Vargas

I didn't know Devon Vargas was still fighting. He had a history as an Olympian I recall, but he hasn't done very good as a Professional really. Last I recall seeing him was getting beaten up by Kevin Johnson.

Ruiz will definitely win this one easy. If he doesn't stop Devon it shows how feather fisted he is, but I can't imagine he doesn't beat him.

i just googles devon vargas, and it came up with a picture, and i was like 'dam what a f@cking fatty! he must weigh well over 300 pounds'

turns out it was just a picture of ruiz. btw to me ruiz clearly beat joe p.

I thought he lost 115-113. Most of the rounds were fairly even, and in rounds like that when all is even I tend to lean toward the defending Champion. Especially when he doesn't look like a tub of goo.

dont think it should matter who the champ is or what the boxers look like. might as well score for the prettyist shorts. parker just flailed with shots all night and looked totally confused and lost pretty much every exchange. probably the best 30 shots of that fight were landed by ruiz. parker pretty much was all ineffectual jabs that were poorly distanced judged and thrown from too far. the fight also showed how f@cking short his arms are for a hw.

Maybe you shortchanged Ruiz then.

But no matter, I agree with jamamb. Champions should never be given the edge simply because they're the champion. They need to earn the round just like the challenger. Equally.

Next season, the NFL isn't going to give the Eagles a 10 point cushion to start the game simply because they are the defending Super Bowl champs.

Was a vacant title. I had Ruiz winning. But it was close.

I also had Ruiz ahead. Comfortably ahead.

I didn't see Parker as effective at all although the tubby Ruiz did seem to wear down late. But for the most part Parker jabbed and missed. Threw right hands and missed.

What did he do to win that decision?

Oh yeah, now I remember. The fight was held in New Zealand.

A top 20 fighter coming off a loss will often drop their caliber of opposition way down for their first comeback fight. Vargas has had the career of a not-very-active journeyman. He has beaten 3 opponents with boxrec ratings in the 12-17 range, and that was all in 2007-2008. I'm inclined to think that other journeymen like Jason Bergman, Willie Herring, Carl Davis Drummond, etc. are a clear cut above Devin Vargas; so I think his boxrec ranking of 183 is too generous. Anyways, this fight will not define Ruiz, it is just the first of 1-3 stepping stones on the way back to a real opponent.

Well, before Parker, Ruiz also only fought very very weak competition. Even to the point of danger in my opinion. Ray Austin for example, who barely won most rounds against bum Stiverne was genuinly risking his life against Ruiz. If an absolute idiot like Stiverne can beat you, or well, with a bit of help of the referee, but still. Then you have absolutely no chance against a guy like Andy Ruiz and you're putting your life at risk.

They way fighter looks should not have any influence in the outcome.

I had Ruiz winning in a close fight against Parker.

I think Parker did the right thing in that fight... When he realized he cannot brawl with Ruiz he started to box instead. In hes own backyard that gave him the points win.

I don't see anyone outside of top 20 beating Ruiz so this fight is kind of meaningless. Ruiz will roll over this Devin dude. Maybe even literally

At one point in time, I not only considered Andy Ruiz Jr. as one of heavyweight boxing’s best prospects, but I also believed that he was probably the most technically skilled of all the big men.

Unfortunately, by the time he steps foot inside the ring (assuming he doesn’t withdraw from yet another bout), he would have only competed in one fight within the last 1 ½ years, which was a highly-controversial loss against Joseph Parker.

I can’t help thinking that his preference to remain inactive for no damn reason, switching trainers numerous times, coupled with his inability to address his weight issues, leads me to question his desire and discipline to compete at the highest levels in this sport. He is really a cruiserweight, competing as a heavyweight, due to his own obesity. I have now lost faith in him.

Anyway, getting back on topic… Ruiz Jr. obviously needs to compete in a relatively easy tune-up bout, just to rid himself of some ring-rust and to also improve his fitness levels… and Devin Vargas is an ideal opponent for him to face.

Given that Top Rank prefers to stage bouts between their own in-house roster of fighters or relatively inexpensive journeymen, it’s hard to envisage Andy Ruiz Jr. being able to develop his talents against better opponents’.

Just to put it into perspective Devin Vargas was dropped twice and stopped by Jason Bergman. He is now 36 years old I think I read. Is that really the best you can do for your comeback Andy?

Ruiz isn't a champion. He doesn't owe a mandatory.

Right now he's barely a contender. He's not exactly on most fan's radar.

If he wants to ease back into boxing after a long layoff, he's perfectly entitled to take on a low risk guy like Vargas.

It's normal. Fighters do it all the time.

Just a bout to wipe off the rust, get in some needed work and earn a paycheck.

There's no need for Ruiz to apologize about his choice of opponent.

True. I've made the same point myself on occasion. He can fight who the hell he likes, when the hell he likes and I have just as much right to be disappointed in his selection, whether my disappointment is justified or not.
