Errol Spence Jr. vs. Carlos Ocampo - June 16, 2018

by Ruthless-RKO
An ESPN.com report early Wednesday morning stated that promoters for Spence, the unbeaten IBF welterweight champion, and mandatory challenger Carlos Ocampo have reached an agreement for them to fight that night. Showtime will televise the Spence-Ocampo match from an undetermined venue in the Dallas area.

Ocampo will fight outside of Mexico for the first time when he travels to the Dallas area to challenge Spence. He last fought November 11, when Ocampo stopped fellow Mexican Dario Ferman (14-4, 11 KOs) in the seventh round in Chihuahua, Mexico.

This happen when Thurman, Garcia and Porter doesn´t wanna fight against you. Spence probably won´t get neither from these 3 in the ring in 2018. I wish Ocambo can make this at least competetive, but Spence will probably steamroll him :box: :box: :box:

IMO if Spence cannot get top WW boxers in ring, he should move up in weight, he is big af. Maybe Hurd, Charlo, Lara will be more welcomed :box: :box: :box:

He should make the most of making the 147 limit. But only to a point where others will fight him. TBH, this is a mandatory. IBF are known for crap mandatories (bar Spence last year).. Once Ocampo's out of the way. I think Spence should be allowed 2 voluntary fights.. make one a unification hopefully.

Maybe Spence should have just vacated his belt so he could get ranked by the other ABC's, and force them to fight him as a mandatory. :OhYes:

Ocampo? Who is that? Never heard of him. Is that the short order fry cook at IHOP?

Spence is starting to take the path of least resistance.

It's a mandatory. Most mandatories suck. Short of vacating the IBF crown, Spence has little choice.

Seen Ocampo's style and what Spence could do with it ?
He could drag out a win from 3-9 easily.

spences last 2 were brook and peterson which is solid. ocampo is a mandatory. spence isnt someone who should yet be put in the looking for an easy route box

seen ocampo and not impressed at all, hell get crushed. ocampo vs ponomarov actually wouldve been a very well matched fight

Considering the inactivity of all the other Welterweights I'm not gonna fault Spence for being active, and satisfying a mandatory. Hopefully he gets Garcia, Porter or Thurman soon after.

I'd love to see Yordenis Ugas get a shot at a big fight too.

It's a summer stand off at Welterweight.
No ones going to fight one another until Autumn.

He's still very young, and has only just gotten to the top. If he's fighting one of the top names by Summer 2019 I'd say he's still doing fine. It's rare to see any fighter come along, and get major fight after major fight. Usually it only happens to guys that keep losing the big one or guys that are just extremely special and are trying to establish their legacy.

Lomachenko for instance having taken on the level of guys he's taken on so early in his Pro career. Oleksandr Usyk is definitely taking the big fights to establish himself as a great too.

Lots of guys have talent, but very few keep getting major fights consecutively. Especially in the modern era, but even in past eras it was often a struggle to always get the biggest fights.

No doubt about it

Give Crawford a year or so to establish himself at the weight and Crawford vs Spence or Thurman becomes big business as well

Why wouldn't it? Thurman fought Luis Collazo and Leonard Bundu...didn't keep him from getting a big fight.

Spence's wins over Brook and Peterson already give his resume name value. This one is just to keep the IBF off his back, and keep him busy.

No they don't.
Brook got wiped out by GGG previously.
Peterson was old.

That's one loss against a Middleweight. Brook was still unbeaten as a Welterweight, and 1 loss doesn't make you washed up or a win over you meaningless.

I think Peterson is close to as good as he ever was. He's never been one of the cream of the crop necessarily, but he's long been a solid contender, and that was still the case when he fought Spence.

I'm not saying Spence's resume is amazing or anything, but it's respectable.

I can't imagine he won't be fighting Garcia, Porter, Thurman or someone like that at some point in the next year following the Ocampo fight.

Well he won't if those 3 avoid fighting him, which right now seems to be the direction they're heading.

Makes sense to get this fight out of the way early to be fair. The other top names will use every excuse in the book to avoid him over the next couple of years. The last thing he needs to do is drop a belt and give them the chance to say he brings nothing to the table without a title. Just keep knocking over whoever will step in with him and put as much pressure on Thurman, Garcia, Porter etc to fight him.
