So I'm reading this book about Bob Fitzsimmons, and just about every Fight described in the book has several references to "He landed a big right hand on the neck"..."He landed a strong left on the neck"...over and over again.

Is this something that has since been banned from the sport or is it something that was once thought of to be effective and then deemed not? Just seems odd to me because you seldom here of guys getting hit in the neck in the modern era, but it's rampant in every fight description in this book.

I find it a little odd naturally.

Maybe it was easier to do because the gloves were much smaller.

I'm pretty sure George Foreman said it was a big right hand to the neck of Muhammad Ali
when he was on the ropes and he felt Ali was on the verge of being knocked-out with a follow-up
when one of George Foreman's so called "friends" yelled from the audience "he's Cheating He's Cheating,
and Foreman said he was shocked lost focused and lost the fight as a result.

Oh that's why Foreman lost. I was wondering. If only he had stayed focused.

Anyway, you do hear description of guys getting hit in the neck in old fight. If a guy gets hit in the side of the neck he would probably have got hit on the side of the head as well and that is how it probably would be described.

Read a couple of Jem Mace fights today, and he seemed to use a few too.

Did he really die penniless ?
Was he ripped of by hangers-on and the like
or poor money management,or perhaps both.

See Roy Jones' famous left hook to the neck of Antonio Tarver... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xYi-hnSAnw

Roy landed a ripping left hook to the neck... Start watching at 17:09 of this video... At 17:10 the neck shot lands.... Then keep on watching.... Cuz at At 17:31...... 17:45.... and 17:58 they show different angles of Roy's famous neck punch... Tarver even said he vaguely remembered getting hit in the neck with the left hook when he watched the replay -- because it hurt so bad.

Shots to the chin do more damage of course... :o
