I came across something interesting the other day.
I was reading a copy of MY LIFE STORY by Joe Louis (published in 1947),
and on page 60,he writes that after the bout with Max Baer (September 1935),
his managers had arranged for him to fight " four bouts in two months"
( all with different styles)
for him to get ready for a named opponent that December (Paulino Uzcudun).
the four opponents were

Andy Wallace
Mickey McAvoy
Stanley Ketchell
Paul Cavalier

(Joe Louis says he knocked each one of them out in the first round.)

What made me notice that,was that I was reading up on the Louis vrs Max Baer bout
and was looking at Joe Louis ring record in his later autobiography
MY LIFE published in 1978,but there is no mention of any of these opponents
in the ring record in the back of the book (which also included numerous exhibitions)
anyone have more info on this ?
why they may have been ommited.

In fairness Ketchel was shot. Hell he was shot 25 years before, literally, and died. Hardly a fair fight.

I wonder if it was supposed to read "Steven Ketchel" in the book
whom Louis would later fight in 1937 in an offical bout (KO 2).

Might have been someone who was named after him or had taken his name to fight under (a bit like Jersey Joe Walcott, and plenty of others).

Anyway I just checked and they appear on CBZ as exhibitions

seems kind of strange those 4 were mentioned and not any other exhibiotions that year.

Probably similar to Floyd Pattersons foghts held behind closed doors that were real fights but unsanctioned and held in private to season him.

Do you have any details regarding these fights?
Such as whom he fought & if "Hurricane" Jackson was one of those opponents? I've heard rumors of a third unsanctioned fight between the two but never discovered if there was any merit to them.

Well, one cannot argue with that.

Were they exhibitions during military service?

BTW...there are a ton of Stanley Ketchels. so one of the previous posters got it right...namesake.

Pompton Lakes New Jersey - just around the corner from where I grew up; Louis held several camps there, I believe.

I found that Mickey McAvoy worked as one of Schmeling's sparing partners for Schmeling-Louis I, he busted open Schmeling eye lid with an unintentional head butt; it was still a small concern the day before the fight, enoung to get a news blurb --- NYT June 15th & 18th 1936
