Boxing News: latest issue

Just back in the UK for work so have picked up the latest issue and have to say that Matt Christie's editorial and Elliott Worsell's piece on the Luis Nery fight in particular are just superb.
Over the years I've read a lot about BN's supposed decline, but I really do feel that Christie is doing a great job as editor - he's giving it a strong voice, commissioning good writers (hat-tip to Terry for the Curtis piece

) and when placed in the context of what I'm sure are tight budgets and other operating constraints it really is an outstanding achievement.
Think it's too easy for everyone in the UK to forget that they're fortunate enough to have the two best boxing magazines (BM still looking good as well) in the world published there. Both teams deserve a lot of credit IMO - talk about a labour of love. Don't take 'em for granted people!

Some great writing in there though I was disappointed there was nothing on the Murray Rittson fight

It was the week before mate, though funnily enough that was the one bit I was disappointed with as well, as it was a very cursory summary that you could have got online before it published - for me that's the only bit about the modern BN I don't get - you know the basics of the fight will be covered by online sources, so I'd expect far more analysis, 'behind-the-scenes' insights etc rather than just a very rudimentary 'fighter x landed shot y and fighter z was stopped...'.

Yeah the mag is in great form at the moment, editorials with balls and some good features. I've been subscribing since 1986 and it's in as a good a shape as I've seen it since the days of Harry Mullan.

Agree completely mate.... and there's no higher praise than that given what a legend Mullan was

Totally agree - Matt Christie is the best / bravest editor for at least 30 years. I hope he's not reading all this he'll be embarrassed going into work tomorrow !!!

Matt Christie is a good bloke and an excellent writer. People harp on about Harry Mullan but take it from me, Harry was an idle so and so, a gifted writer (when he got round to it) but an idle so and so.

Never rated Harry Mullan as a reporter.
All he did for the Leonard v Hagler fight was harp on about Hagler being robbed.
Overated. The book he wrote called "the illustrated history of boxing" was all nicked from "a pictorial history of bixing" by sam andre and nat fleischer.

You've clearly never read 'Fighting Words', an anthology of his work. Years since I have, but makes a mockery of any claim he wasn't a great boxing writer.

Christie's editorials are superb and he isn't afraid of taking on the big boys. I also like the fact that he doesn't blow his own trumpet too much. They won an award the other week and it was tucked away behind all the boxing, which I thought was classy.
Some cracking features in there every week. A minor quibble - sometimes I think Worsell tries too hard and his stories are overblown. Nothing a good sub-editor couldn't sort out but not sure they've even got them any more.
Dooley seems to have access and respect, and Whittle still putting in some serious miles on the small hall circuit.
I really enjoy Alex Daley's history pieces, they are good to read and always learn something.
Still skipping the amateur section though. I get it through pocketmags , which works out at less than a quid per issue so even if I read half of it, it's still worth it.

I think he's improving. At first virtually every feature contained some reference to David Haye/ Adam Booth/ George Groves as these are the people he was around when he first started writing about boxing. As he gets more experience he'll improve, he has fantastic potential. His book Making Haye, whilst lacking an objective criticism of Haye's safety first effort during the Klitschko fight, and embarrassing himself after it, was very well written.

Thanks! I got lucky with Curtis as he was really honest and open. I hope you are well, mate. I'm working on a few BN bits for April so fingers crossed.
