Here is a question. What if Australian middleweight Dave Sands didn't get killed in 1952 and how his career would play out? He beat future middleweight champion Carl "Bobo" Olson twice and was in line as a number one contender to Sugar Ray Robinson, who retired in the same year. If Sands didn't die, would he be a World Middleweight Champion during Robinson's first retirement?

Interesting thought. He probably would have got a shot at the vacant title. After Robinson retired Olson beat Turpin for the vacant title. If Sands had lived, it probably would have been a Sands-Turpin fight for the title, not Olson-Turpin. Turpin at his best was very good. However, he was not that impressive when he fought Olson and lost a fight he should have won. Assuming that Turpin performed like he did against Olson, than Sands probably would have beaten him and won the title.

Depending on what record you believe one i'v seen sais Sands had 110 fight's with only 10 defeat's Boxrec got Sands record as 87-10-1 in all 98 fight's with 10 defeat's either way that's a great record for a 26 year old who was in his or nearing his prime fighting day's I think at the time of his death Dave was ranked number 2 contender in the World At Middleweight the night Randy Turpin beat Robinson for the Middleweight World Title Dave won a ten rounder on the undercard American negro Henry Brimm fought a 10 round draw with Sugar Ray in 1949......18 month's later Dave Sands iced Brimm in 2 round's and yes Dave defeated Bobo Olsen twice he was almost a certain to have won that WORLD TITLE WETHER IT WAS Olsen/Turpin/Sugar Ray standing across the ring from him Sands also Knocked out Dick Turpin in 1 round so he would have most certainly fought Randy for family pride if he lived.....DAVE SANDS THE UNCROWNED MIDDLEWEIGHT KING FROM THE 50'S WHAT A SHAME

When Olson won the title after Robinson's retirement, he had this to say :

"This title should have belonged to Dave Sands. It would have been his had he lived."

Thanks and yes, Sands would have been the world middleweight champion after Robinson's first retirement and it was a nice tribute from his opponent Carl "Bobo" Olson after winning the vacant world middleweight title.

What a pity we don't see more acts of sportsmanship like that in boxing.

seems like he wouldve had a great shot to win it but dosnt always work out like that. plenty of guys lost fights they looked like probable winners in.

We wouldn't know the outcome of Sands' career if he haven't being killed in a car accident which is ashamed.
