Baer V. Braddock: Forgotton Great Fight

I was poking around YouTube last week, and I came across a pretty good version of the Baer/Braddock fight. After a couple of rounds, I found myself locked into what I hadn't known to be such a competitive and exciting fight. BUT...what I couldn't get out of my mind as I watched was Cinderella Man. One could swear it was Russell Crowe out there. So I had two treats in one. A greater appreciation for the movie, and the fight. It was a great fight, and showed what a great fighter Braddock could be when things went his way. (injuries; depression, etc.) I really must suggest it for those of you who may not have seen it or haven't seen it in some time.

Wow... Baer vs Braddock was a boring assed fight... Baer couldn't slip punches and Braddock jabbed him right in the kisser as he pleased.. He popped in 1-2's and occasional follow up punches... Baer gave it away by clowning and not fighting.

Try watching Louis vs Baer... That was a really great fight... You see the great jab of Joe Louis at his best -- slamming in scores and jabs and ripping Baer with swift, brutal, smashing combinations... Baer scored heavily after the bell rang to end the 2nd round... it was his 1st opportunity to hit Louis really good... In the 3rd Louis floors Bear twice with spectacular punches... Baer gets floored again in the 4th and is counted out on 1 knee... It was the first time he was ever stopped.

That's great Kalan, however; the thread is on Baer v. Braddock. Sorry you found this fight boring.

I don't think it was a boring fight for all the radio fans who only heard the round by round audio......
The nation was on the edge of it's seats in what was a pretty well listened to broadcast.

And when you have a truly heavy hitter sort of held back by pepper spray and everyone sort of figuring that it was inevitable that Braddock was going to lose and lose badly, and yet he fights on, round after round, it does capture the imagination of many.

But you'd need an entire Navy Fleet, An Air Force Squadran and a Marine Batallion to capture an imagination the size of Kalan's. So I fully understand his assessment of a little dust up like that. However....it was considered a Cinderella story if ever there was one in Boxing.

Yeah, who wasn't depressed during the Great Depression.
My Mom's dad (my grandfather) had to "Ride the Rods" to find work,
and got caught up in a Georgia Chain-gang just trying to do it (find work in another state)once.

Bert Sugar summed it up (the movie) nicely when he said: "The movie made you think you saw the greatest fight in history," and then pointed out just how dull the actual fight was.

Hmmmmmm..... I've never seen Julius Caesar and Jesus Christ in the same room... They both lived around the same time period, had the same initials, and were good public speakers.... Could all that be a coincidence??? .... BuzzBox should look into this since he has an imagination as far flung as the quasars and as deep as balloon skin.

Crowe did a good job imitating Braddock's personality and style.. The other actor did a plllaabbbffflllaaatt job on Baer's personality and style...what a hatchet job!!! Max Baer was a terrific, fun guy by all accounts. He used to appear on TV talk shows, variety shows and comedy shows in the 50's....as did his brother Buddy. Max was a funny guy and very self-deprecating about his boxing career... He said he got hit too much and he’d be an actor if he had it to do over.

Max Baer Jr tells the story of asking his dad to teach him how to box about 100 times. Senior kept telling him “I never learned how to box. I can’t help you.” Finally when Max Jr was a strapping teenager he pestered his dad for the last time.

Sr said “Okay go buy some boxing gloves and I’ll teach you good.” Junior ran out to a sporting goods store and bought 2 sets of sparring gloves. He was all excited. They took off their shirts, gloved up, and went into the back yard.

“The first lesson is to swing hard and fast” his dad told him as they squared off. Max Sr motored back quickly and to his right as he hitched up his pants as he was noted for... He came in rapidly and swung a big right that slammed into his son’s head and knocked him flat... As Max Jr looked up with his ears ringing his dad said, “Now, the next lesson, if you’re still interested, is how to duck a punch. But I’d advise you to be an actor. You’re too damned slow to be a boxer.”
