Very moving article/interview from McRae in today’s Guardian. I’m sure someone can post a link. He’s such a fine writer, but more importantly, he captures the anguish of a clearly fine young man extremely movingly.

Excellent article. You feel his pain in it. Felt myself getting quite emotional when he spoke of how Mikes family have been with him. At least he has that comfort. Really strong, lovely people they must be.

This is why I truly hate the pre-fight nonsense , encouraged by TV and promoters, encouraging fighters to tell everyone how the hate their opponent and what they're going to do to them. The face to face staring is now pretty standard behaviour , it's an absolute disgrace.

I don't mind it if it's genuine. It adds a bit of spice to the fight. A lot of the time you're gonna get guys who genuinely can't go each other. It's the nature of the sport. But as you say, all this manufactured beef is fuckin dreadful. Matchroom are fuckin terrible for it.

I can't go these cringeworthy face to face, round a table shite either. It's embarrassing. I don't even watch them anymore.

Good article highlighting some of the harsh realities of this game.
Some posters should remember this when they jump on the bandwagon knocking fighters.
It's really true what a lonely game it is but 10 times lonely when you have retired.

My mate is ex pro and was fukked around by Tommy Gilmour. He was ready for going off the rails when he wrapped it. He ended up going to college and then uni. Studied like fukk he said just so he had something to occupy his mind. Must be so easy to go the other route and hit the bottle etc....

Boxing is tough on so many levels, and that article highlighted it.
But let's not forget the positives it brings.
Boxing teaches courage, discipline, mortality and strength.
All those things can be invaluable lessons in helping some people cope with life.
Think of all the inner city gyms who take at risk teens off the streets and teach them those lessons.
I only wish more of the highly successful boxers would give back after they retire.
