Nordin Ben-Salah, more commonly known as Fighting Nordin, has been shot and killed in an Amsterdam street. Witnesses heard shots and saw two men on a motoribike riding away at speed. Police believe it was a professional hit.
Nordin was shot several times.
The charismatic Dutchman won the WBU super-middleweight title in 1999 and was ranked in the world top 10 by the WBA.
A dangerous puncher, he compiled a record of 36-2-1 (26) and went unbeaten in his first 32 fights before South Africa's Sidney Msutu - a man he had previousy beaten - outlasted him in nine shocking rounds in 2001.
Nordin showed character to avenge that defeat just five months later on a unanimous 12-round decision.
He lost in similar circumstances when he ran out of gas and was stopped in the 12th by Argentina's rugged Francisco Mora last year.
Again, Nordin quickly avenged the defeat on a 12-round decision.
Mora had gone 12 rounds with Robin Reid.
Nordin destroyed the one British opponent he fought, Michael Alexander, in a round in 1998. He had been lined up to fight Brian Magee earlier this year in Belfast, but a long-standing elbow injury forced him out.
He was 32.
