Report: Mexico’s Jamie Munguia Will Be Golovkin’s Opponent May 5

Munguia is undefeated (28-0, 24 KOs) and a powerful prospect commonly considered one of boxing’s best young fighters. He is just 21 years old, though, is completed untested at the championship level and most recently has competed as a super welterweight, a division below middleweight.



Munguia fought at welterweight as recently as 11 months ago. He made his pro debut near the super lightweight limit of 140 pounds in July 2013, when he was just 16.

Organizers of the May 5 card believe having Golovkin face a Mexican opponent will help promote an HBO Pay-Per-View event that’ll take place on Cinco de Mayo.

This is classic Mayweather.. always picking Hispanic opponents..

TBH, could have picked a better fighter, but short notice isn't always easy.. Some boxers will always talk, then lose and then say they needed more time..

This would be Munguia's first fight as a full fledged Middleweight

He's had a few bouts that would officially be Middleweight bouts where he and his opponent weighed around 157, but for the most part he's been a Jr. Middleweight and Welterweight in his career.

He's only 21, so he's still growing a little bit, but it doesn't bode well for him that his 1st stop at Middleweight is gonna be against the man who is OVERWHELMINGLY the best opponent he'll have ever faced.

I guess they figure even though he's unknown the fact that he's unbeaten will make him somewhat credible for some people.

There was Zurdo, but only Arym mentioned that.. and take in the fact that he's not on any terms with HBO, i doubt that would have happened.

Zurdo is a good fighter that's bigger than GGG. This kid they appear to be picking is an unknown smaller man.

It probably helps that this kid is affiliated with Golden Boy, who were lead promoters of Canelo vs GGG. GBP will own all the contracts with venue, TV networks, sponsors etc, so picking one of their fighters means K2 don't have to start a whole event from scratch, as would be the case with Zurdo.

It's still massively underwhelming, but I guess we have to blame Canelo for that.

Please Nevada commission, do not sanction this fight.

Nope. All cancelled on GBP part.. K2 were never involved. Loeffler is head of GGG Promotions who wer co-promoting.

Loeffler stated that he applied for everything from scratch and this is going to be 100% GGG promoted event. It's also not taking place at T-Mobile.. it's at MGM Grand.

If GBP would have likely had Spike, but as mentioned above, it only makes sense that it's a Mexican on May 5.

JCC Jr. offered to fight GGG at 168.. he's never making it anything below that again

NSAC hasn't approved it.

But Munguia might help bring in another 10,000 or so viewers to the fight since he's Mexican and it's Cinco de Mayo.

Unfortunately, even Mexican fans are pretty unfamiliar with the undersized Munguia, so HBO better throw in the towel and televise it on its normal channel.

A PPV telecast would be a disaster.

If they wanted a Mexican, Chávez Jr. would have been the right one, even if Golovkin had to agree to a 170 limit.

I would propose a handicap match : CW Chavez vs. MW Golovkin. I would expect a very competitive fight and the decent ppv numbers.

If a possible Munguia fight (or Spike for that matter) is ridiculously broadcast on PPV, will promoters still have the balls to charge that $70 price tag?
