"Pacquiao picks best friend over Roach"

It’s official: Eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao will return to the ring sans longtime trainer Freddie Roach.

Roach has been training Pacquiao since 2001 and the duo worked side by side for 34 fights.

“Manny has told me Buboy (Fernandez) will be handling the training on this fight,” Pacquiao’s manager, Michael Koncz, told ESPN. “What’s important to Manny is that he has one voice to listen to in the corner that he trusts, and that’s Buboy for this fight.”

Fernandez is Pacquiao’s best friend and assistant trainer.

Thoughts?

Not sure why Roach didn't just lend him Marvin Somodio or something. I've seen Somodio going solo into corner nowadays.

Freddy wasn't keen for Manny to keep fighting anyway. He said as much after the Horn fight.
I think Freddy is over rated as a trainer anyway. Manny was one of his biggest success storys and probably would have been with or without Freddy anyhow.

Good for Manny. I hope he goes on to schedule a couple more high grossing fights before it's all over. Freddie said nothing while Arum treated Manny like crap these last couple of years so screw them both.

Classy statement from Roach. I think Manny is done at the top level and Roach's best days as a top coach are behind him anyway so it kind of ties in nicely

Hhmmm, let's see... he's the 7-time trainer of the year, member of four separate boxing hall of fames, and a WBC lifetime achievement award.

He's trained... Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Mike Tyson, Oscar De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, Danny Jacobs, Vanes Martirosyan, Jean Pascal, Zou Shiming, Marlon Starling, Michael Moorer, Virgil Hill, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Wladimir Klitschko, Amir Khan, Denis Lebedev, Viktor Postol, Jorge Linares, Wayne McCullough, Craig McEwan, Scott Quigg, Steve Collins, O'Neil Bell, Peter Quillin, Andy Ruiz, Israel Vasquez, Brian Viloria, Johnny Tapia, JCC Jr., Raymundo Beltran, Brian Minto, Lateef Kayode, Wale Omotoso, Juan Lazcano, Gerry Penalosa, Rey Bautista, Roman Karmazin, Ruslan Provodnikov, Jose Benavidez, Peter Manfredo Jr., Frankie Gomez, and others.

He was trained by Eddie Futch; and has shared the ring with Hector Camacho, Greg Haugen, Bobby Chacon, and others.

Maybe he's a better trainer than you're aware of, and you're the one whose estimation of him is wrong? Especially since you seem to think that he has a thin training resume once Pacquiao is removed.

Fair comment. He's well done now though! He'd be better suited sitting back and chipping in an advisory kind of role now.
