Gennady Golovkin vs. Vanes Martirosyan - May 5, 2018

Can’t really blame GGG. But, this stinks. Vanes had such potential and generally has done nothing with periods of inactivity.
The coveted IBO belt is not at risk?
Are you talking about risk of defeat or risk of being stripped by the IBF?Enlightened-One wrote: ↑18 Apr 2018, 12:43 Isn’t GGG needlessly putting his title unification dreams at serious risk by facing someone like Vanes Martirosyan? No good can come from this bout.
Vanes Martirosyan has never beaten a top fighter. He has been inactive for two years. He isn't a middleweight. He has only managed to win three fights in almost last five years (losing three others). He is also unranked.armageto wrote: ↑18 Apr 2018, 12:54 It would be dumb for the IBF to strip him. It wasn't his fault Canelo F'd this fight up. After this fight he can unify with Saunders or face his IBF mando fight.
Vanes has 3 losses, but he's never been stopped. All 3 losses were to more boxer type fighters, and all 3 were competitive. He has good size for 154, and fought a couple of times near MW, so I think he will fill out his frame well for the fight. Not having fought in almost 2 years is worrisome though.
If anything, Hell, it's something to watch. It will be interesting to see if G3 has slipped, or the recent increased level of competition in Jacobs/Canelo only made it appear that way. G3 "should" stop him before double digit rounds.

The WBA, WBC and IBF have previously REJECTED Vanes Martirosyan as a suitable opponent for Gennady Golovkin, but GGG chose to go ahead with the bout anyway.
The IBF usually abide by their own rules and it superficially seems that Gennady is participating in an unsanctioned bout, which theoretically means that his title should be declared vacant.
Apparently, Vasyl Lomachenko destroyed Vanes Martirosyan during sparring last week (click on the Tweet for details):armageto wrote: ↑18 Apr 2018, 13:10Enlightened-One wrote: ↑18 Apr 2018, 13:04Vanes Martirosyan has never beaten a top fighter. Nobody said he was a top fighter or a MW. Nobody also told Canelo to fail his drug tests. Though Vanes has had a few fights over the 154 limit. It would be dumb for the IBF to strip G3, since they know the Canelo rematch is coming up in September. Nobody cares bout the sanctioning bodies rules anymore. they are constantly adjusted to suit their needs. As a fan, there should only be one belt for division anyhow.
Either way, I don't give a f&ck what the IBF does. Everybody can strip G3 of his belts. He's the #1 MW right now.
Agreed. It's ridiculous to punish the victim here, and these are special circumstances to say the least. Martirosyan has the opportunity of a lifetime. There will be some who'll argue its unfair he hasn't earned the right, and then there'll be some who'll argue he's not good enough.armageto wrote: ↑18 Apr 2018, 12:54 It would be dumb for the IBF to strip him. It's a fight that I wil enjoy myself watching on the 5th. If you don't want to watch it, simply don't. Nobody thinks Vanes has a shot to win, I just want to see how G3 looks in regards to his last two fights. A G3 with a lot of gas left in the tank should win in 4 rounds. A G3 that has slipped some should win by 8. If G3 is just about at the end of his rope, it goes late.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑18 Apr 2018, 13:11Apparently, Vasyl Lomachenko destroyed Vanes Martirosyan during sparring last week (click on the Tweet for details):armageto wrote: ↑18 Apr 2018, 13:10Enlightened-One wrote: ↑18 Apr 2018, 13:04

This is a mismatch. Nobody can pretend otherwise.
If any other fighter participated in a mismatch of epic proportions like this and you'd criticise them severely.armageto wrote: ↑18 Apr 2018, 13:18It's a fight that I wil enjoy myself watching on the 5th. Vanes is unranked because he hasn't fought in a while. If he did, he'd be ranked in the top 10. Again, if you don't want to watch it, don't.
It's not the ideal match anybody wanted to see. You have to blame Canelo for that one though. On a short notice fight, this isn't the worst to be had. It's WAY better than if G3 fought the Mexican kid. My only issue is Vanes' time off from the sport. He himself, isn't a bad fighter. He fought Charlo tough and Andrade. Granted he has no A+ wins, but he's beaten some decent names. He's lost to division leading fighters, and close as well.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑18 Apr 2018, 13:25If any other fighter participated in a mismatch of epic proportions like this and you'd criticise them severely.armageto wrote: ↑18 Apr 2018, 13:18It's a fight that I wil enjoy myself watching on the 5th. Please don't allow your bias to cloud your ability to objectively evaluate this particular situation.
GGG is a great fighter and he's probably a decent bloke also, but he shouldn't be sharing the ring with someone like Vanes.
If Lomachenko is capable of battering this guy, what's Golovkin going to do to him!![]()
