If you had been his trainer, how would you go about improving him as a fighter/boxer ?

Sibson bounced around like crazy... And too many feints... I would settle him down, stop the bouncing, get him to step smoother, and be more selective with his punches... You look like you're bouncing when you not if you step in an out quickly and precisely, but you look smooth.. When you bounce you look like a jumping bean.. Mayweather, Lomachenko, and Mikey step well, never giving any opponent any rhythm to work off of.. You can't time them.. Sanchez was another.

Hagler punched the Hell out of Sibson because Sibson was throwing when he didn't have a target... He often missed badly, leaving himself open.. You can't slip every punch and you shouldn't try... You have to block or parry some and slip, duck, or roll some... You learn which ones doing the mitts... He needed a lot more sparring... But 8 to 12 rounds of sparring does you no good if you're not getting good direction from your corner. You'll make the same mistakes over and over til they're so deeply ingrained you can't unlearn them.

Then he needed better range on his jab and straight right.. It's a matter of throwing a smooth effortless punch and making contact, not throwing hard.. Like in basketball you only take high percentage shots.. You don't gun away and hit 20% of your field-goals. If you're landing 50% you're doing well.. You need to outscore the guys you can't KO.

Then he needed better balance. Do handstands, one legged sprints forwards and backwards, use ladder stepping routines, but you need fantastic balance so it's an everyday item.

Defense is the thing he needed to work on overtime, and everyday.. You can box for 20 or 30 years if you can defend well.. You'll be done quickly if you're getting nailed.. The basic description of Boxing is the art of self defense.. It doesn't matter if you score KO's.. Nobody paid to see May-Pac because they knocked anybody out lately.

He was decent. I remember watching his fight against Davison. Davison was much taller, but Sibson simply outhustled him. He was in way over his head against Hagler.

I saw some of his fights towards the end of his career. He was a powerful puncher, couldn’t quite cut it against the top guys though. I saw his fight with Andries and Tate, Andries was too big for him and Tate a bit too classy. He steamrollered Brian Anderson though, who was a good domestic level guy.

Why can't everyone use a few sentences and not a biography in these posts.

To answer the question might take a few paragraphs rather than sentences... To write a Sibson biography would take 5 months, 37 interviews, and 20 chapters... Why do people have to exaggerate? :stop:

Who said I was speaking about you? So you're paranoid as well as sensitive? Golden Oldie was right about you.

didn't Sibson have some type of problem keeping his trunks up in the fight with Hagler ?
He is English and may have been pre-occupied with them falling down to his knees
in the heat of battle and people seeing his " Bum".

Four things chief seconds can control and never get wrong... Trunks that fit comfortably and won't slide down.... Shoelaces that don't become untied... A perfect fitting mouthpiece that doesn't come out when you're hit.... and applying super glue to the tape on the gloves so the tape doesn't come loose from friction, grabbing, rubbing, water, or impact.

It's weird how often one of those 4 things goes wrong... AJ's lace taping had on going issues vs Parker.

Sibbo was a very good walk-in banger with an exceptionally hard left hook.
His best victories were over former world champion Alan Minter, Dwight Davison & John Collins. He was unlucky to have been at his best during the Hagler era & by the time that Hagler was gone he was past it.

And there were better Middleweights after him....that's why Leonard abandoned the Title... Nunn, McCallum, Jackson. then Toney came along.. and then Reggie Johnson... Toney eventually fought at Heavyweight.. He was a big powerful Middleweight who was losing to Michael Nunn... But the way he ended him -- you never saw that from Hagler.

Actually I just read somewhere that it wasn't actually his trunks that was the problem in the Hagler fight,
but his "Cup-Athletic Supporter" had come apart during the fight.
Talk about a major distraction.
I'll try and find which round that happened in.
