I noticed in last weeks boxing news carl was saying that he has to fight on for the cash as has not made enough yet. Is he not relativley well off??

How much did he get for the haye fight??hope he only continues for as long as he really wants to and not just for the cash.

Anyone know what his nxt fight will be??

Thompson must have substantial career earnings so far after all the highly anticipated title fights he's been involved in. From what he's saying the guy clearly doesn't intend on getting a job when he retires from boxing.

is that before we take off deductions??? E.g trainer manager, and tax(40%)

if so leaves him with what 20k??? god knows but just by way he spoke in interview he aint got enough. heres the piece??

DO YOU LOVE BOXING?

A bit of my does but a bit of me detests it.certain aspects. I'm happy now but at times I've felt horrible. Look i dont do it for love, its money. i thought id be retired at 35 would have made enough by then but i havent. I'd love those big pay days the top boys get like Lennox Lewis- but know its never going to happen. I'm still plodding on looking for financial security.

How many of those were big earners? Probably the fights with Eubank and the Haye fight...was out of the sport for quite a while too, tax bill etc. I doubt he's financially secure yet.

Well he has his government pension to support him as well when he retires

Well, he was shopping in Tescos before he conducted the BN interview. He can't be that well off.
But he's got a couple of big paydays ahead.

Sure he's not financially secure, not many fighters at Thompsons level ever are. But he must have earned well.

Like I say the guy doesn't sound like he's looking to do a 9-5 job once he's finished with boxing, so he's still very much on the hunt for some big pay nights so he can put his feet up at the end of it all.

He should be allowed to put his feet up at the end of it all, one of the most entertaining boxers of recent years.

I totally understand where Carl is coming from. Let's say for instance, he owns his own house outright, he has a car or two, but he's only got enough for a year or two in the bank, if that?

What's he going to do when he retires? He's not going to be getting any decent jobs at his age, I'm sure he doesn't want to spend his twlight years working on building sites labouring....

If he could make 150k before he retires, that could set him up with a business venture or something to prevent him having to work like a dog after all those years of hard yakka.

I'd like to see him go into training fighters when he retires, I think he'd be very good at that and with all his experience of the highes and lows of boxing he could give invaluable advise to those willing to listen.

It's a good point. People think these lads are on about £250,000 a fight, but it's more like £25,000 and as you say, Thompson might have picked up £70,000 against Haye.

The lump sums they get does mean they could invest in property though, which I know I would if I was getting lump sums.

That's what Billy Schwer did and I know another lad who's doing just that with the money he gets from his fights.

Thompson grossed £80,000 to defend against Haye.

I'm surprised he hasn't had any USA exposure yet. He'd go down a treat there, and get some decent pay-days too.

i heard Thompson got £100k gross for Haye, David got £50k...

Thompson must have got well paid for the two Eubank fights, the second one especially

Carl has earned well ,eubanks twice ,two big fights in Germany, which he would have got at least 100,000 + ,he got a big pay day against Nelson .
Its not how much a fighter earns its how much he spends and saves.

I take it you mean before tax, trainers expenses etc? If that is the case, then he ain't gonna see more than about half of that. 40k is a decent whack, but hardly silly money is it?

I reckon he might have earnt more than that for the eubank fight, but you gotta figure over his entire career he's made whats, 3-400k as a rough ballpark figure. He's been a pro since the late 80's it's hardly a bloody fortune is it?

Yeah, 80k before tax. For what was effectiveley a Battle of Britain.

I think Sibbo and Minter each got more than that for their fight back in 1981.
