Barry mcguigan vs eusebio pedroza

Fight I haven't seen although I will watch it soon.

Question I have is, how much of an underdog was Barry? Pedroza had plenty of defences and Barry was stepping up in class. Going off their records at the time I think mcguigan must have been a huge underdog?

Wasn't into boxing when it took place but always thought it would've been comparative to something like Hatton v Tszu odds wise

I think the odds would have been a bit closer. Tszuyu whilst old had had excellent demolitions of Judah and Mitchell too I think within not too many years of the Hatton fight. Whereas there had been a perception that Pedrosa had been a little lucky to retain on a couple of occasion- Lockridge and Laporte (who of course Mcguigan totally dominated), fighting away from home as he always did I think there was a bit more of a perception he had to end up on the wrong side of the scores sooner or later. Also it was known he had big problems at the weight, as you can see he looks huge next to Mcguigan who was no small feather himself.

Short version Pedrosa definitely favourite and probably pretty clear but Mcguigan in beating Laporte And Taylor so impressively had more credibility at world level than Hatton, plus Pedrosas last wins not as impressive as KT's so all in the betting gap narrower in the Mcguigan Pedrosa fight. IMO :TU:

I remember my dad telling me about this as a boy! I think Pedroza was favourite outside of Uk/Ire but folk over here all loved Barry and wanted (and believed) he would win!

My old man was a massive McGuigan fan and even had my old dear looking forward to his fights but he was always raging that he 'ducked' Nelson! That seemed to always get him

My dad boxed at a decent level as well but was very negative as a boxing fan! I remember sometime in 96/97/98 (can't be specific) he said Calzaghe would get 'found out' and wasn't 'anything special'  To be fair to him, he did know his boxing but he made a severe Helen Hunt of that one   Never tire of reminding him of it, even though I was just a kid

Pedroza opened as favourite but by fight night it was more or less even money with some books even having McGuigan as slight odds-on favourite in the UK & Ireland.

McGuigan was excellent , I watched the fight when Horse done that Challenge thing a couple years back, he never gave Pedroza a minute, perfect tactics against the ageing champ, great showing of pressure fighting, Pedroza was down and saved by the bell a couple of times

I never knew McGuigan had such a big KO% until I watched him a few times

I'd imagine Pedrosa favourite outside Oreland and the UK though?

I imagine so too CP but Ive never come across what the actual odds were in the States for example.

McGuigan didn't face Taylor until after he beat Pedroza (it was his first defence).

Yeah I can't imagine how I'd find out. Don't suppose it was exactly a huge betting fight outside the UK

No worries fella. Only remember it so well as it was McGuigan who got me into boxing! First fight I can truly remember vividly was him against Laporte. What I'd have given to be in the King's Hall on some of those nights :TU:

And Barry barely laid a glove on Taylor before the American quit on his stool

I was well in to my boxing then but I wasn't really that well versed on Tszyu, other than he sparked Judah comically! I remember being at this daft rave thing at the time and rushing home with everyone! Dying to see what happened! What did you think of it at the time Pug?

I remember this happening but not who was favourite. Loved Finbar. Always thought him and Jeff Fenech would have been fun.

Nelson and Fenech had a rematch years later when they were both old men didn't they?

I watched the Jim McDonnell v Azumha Nelson fight years later! McDonnell gave him a right old go after a bad start!

They fought three times. The robbery in Vegas (which I haven't watched since but should), the rematch in Oz when Azumah stopped him then 17 years later a little money making rubber match.

I remember the rubber match yeah! I wasn't aware how much Fenech meant to the Aussies until then! Guy was a proper legend!

Jim was a tough, compact boxer. Didn't waste much, very fit.

I won money on him beating Finbar as McGuigan had got cut in training before the fight and I'd heard Jim had been training specifically for reopening it. Which he did.

I've told the story a few times on here about how he left me an obscene voice message calling me "an unwashed Pommie c*nt"

I remember seeing an interview with McDonnell where he was talking about being offered the McGuigan fight earlier but saying 'no thanks' and his reasoning was, 'we'll catch you when you next come round' and going on about how boxing was all about timing etc.....

Yep. Funny story. I'm sitting in Hooters drinking beer at the moment but when I get home I'll type the story.
