Why this guy Ryan Garcia doesn't fight at 147 lbs ?! He looks like he is a welter at the weigh in against Jayson Velez

I mean he looks big. He should fight at ww. Probably they try to build him up at the lower weight classes having this big size advantage and get him some facil title shots till he goes up to 147-154 lbs?

You need to look at his legs. They're sticks, but he is a big SFW with that said. Guy is probably more of a natural LWW if anything. He'd probably end up there at some point.

It’s not unusual to see oversized weight cutters exploit their significant size advantage they have over their smaller opponents, due to their ability to lose and regain a massive amount of weight immediately before and shortly after the official weigh-in.

Obvious examples of this include the likes of: Terence Crawford, Errol Spence Jr., Daniel Jacobs, Jermall Charlo, Vasyl Lomachenko, Jarrett Hurd, Maciej Sulecki, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and the list goes on-and-on.

For sure, if a fighters’ weight has been poorly managed, then this sort of practice can backfire, but we’ve seen this ploy used far too often and persistently prove to be incredibly successful to rule out situations, such as Ryan Garcia’s, as being unusual.

yes hes big for 130 and theyve matched him with a lot of smaller guys being brought up. id think at his age he may be able to keep it up his weight game for a while, it will be part of his game and what makes him effective

He reminds me of Chavez Jr draining himself to make 160 lbs then he was coming as a cruiserweight in the ring.

It's a calculated risk and further confirmation that his promoter Oscar De La Hoya is grooming him to be another "Golden Boy." Oscar was a half-inch TALLER than Garcia when he debuted as a pro at age 19 but went for his first world title at 130. Had he not started at such a light weight he never would been the first fighter to win world titles at 6 different weight divisions!!

He's clearly following the Golden Boy playbook of winning his first world title at the lowest weight possible so GBP can bolster his accolades in the future as a "four-division world champ" (or however many he eventually wins).

Pretty safe to assume he wont match Oscar's 6 world titles, but that strategy is already in play by putting Garcia against smaller guys like Velez and Vargas. The risk of "starving" him to win a world title is that he could be weakened to the point where he is not fighting up to his potential and the whole strategy could backfire.

Keep in mind that DLH went for his first 2 world titles against relatively weak world champs (Jimi Bredahl at 130, Paez at 135). It wasnt until Oscar hit 140 that he stepped up his level of comp and won that title from JC Chavez Sr.

Expect Garcia to likewise face the weakest possible "world champ" at 130 and probably 135 as well. Of course, that depends on the whole strategy not BACKFIRING and Garcia losing even BEFORE he gets to fight for a world belt.

Garcia has good pop but he’s gotta get busier with that jab or the top level is gonna expose him. He looks susceptible to guys who will crowd him and get inside consistently. He doesn’t look comfortable on the ropes at this point.

He looks 14 years old for heavens sake look at him.

Overall Garcia was good.
He relies on quick power punching methods to achieve his goals, no jab ... the focus is on offensive.
