Money and Boxing

So had a look at the EBU title fights been made and noticed Frankie Gavin and for a title that is classed the real European Title it baffles me. Also Dereck Chisora losing to Pulev and Whyte then fighting for it. Boxing seems to be more about money that fighting. In truth Eddie hearn and fish eyes run boxing as the governing bodies don't have a clue. Pay your cash and do what you like. Bit like prostitution it feels like. No wonder UFC has totally captured the audience the best fight the best and they don't do mismatches and fights just cause you can sell a shed load of tickets. Madnes

I only took interest in boxing when my brother turned over and the poo I have seen is unreal. And the further his career it goes the worst it gets. He's just a type of guy who lives to fight but money and egos have totally sickened him. I followed kickboxing before and the best always fight the best and it was easy to make. Again there isn't much money in it so I guess that may be a factor. I look at kickboxers who all turn over and they just want to fight anyone whereas the boxers are protected. I look at Anthony Fowler and how he is takin people out and it's disgusting. In amateur boxing when my brother turned over he was refused to fight as a novice and had to fight boxers with over 100 fights but in the pro game you can match a commonwealth gold medal winner with a guy who's been knocked out 30 times. Honestly disgusting but it's allowed because the big wigs pay there fees

All professional sport is bent. Where theres money involved the sport plays second fiddle to the cash.
Boxing has always suffered from it's association with gangsters and shady figures, but im sure that football and athletics are worse.

Yeah basically he's being screwed over with Frank's men sending him threatening letters and trying to bully him into rematches for pish cash, no gain or progression. Also been sending him threatening letters to sign a new contract ( due no rematch clause). You wouldn't believe half the stuff. Now I see what Ricky burns etc went threw. Managers and promotors ruin what should be a gentleman's sport. For guys to be punched in the face for 36 minutes to be threatened with law suits etc for not doing what men who have never stepped in the ring is a disgrace.
Real fighters deserve respect. Derek Chisora got a fine for throwing a table that could have seriously hurt someone, Peter McDonough got a massive ban for handbags. Its insane.

It hasn't though. Certainly not on a global level and certainly not domestically in the UK.

Maybe just where I am from. Casino is rammed when ufc is on. When wlad fought Joshua didn't even put it on. Conor McGregor is bigger than any fighters in the UK. Its expanding. I watch a card and I can't predict who will win half the time all even fights . 3 title fights and all 3 champions lost their belts. What people pay to see not be rippled off

The next Echo show was probably the fastest selling combat show I’ve ever seen. Impossible to get tickets. Would have sold Wembley.

Well I don't know where you are of course but bar McGregor I reckon most MMA fighters could walk down a British street largely unrecognised, and there's an argument that McGregor found wider fame due to the fact that he decided to take up boxing.

Dundee. And no chance guys like Anderson Silva, gsp and Ronda Roussey are huge. Surely you agree mma for match making is 100x better than boxing

Not sure the biggest names in the sport not fighting is good matchmaking. McGregor hasn't fought in 18 months and turned to boxing for a payday. Rousey is now a pretend fighter having been battered a couple of times. GSP and Silva are old men by and large and the former has fought, what, once in five years?
For a sport that is supposedly booming you'd think the likes of Miocic would be getting to household name territory but they're clearly not. MMA has grown obviously but I think it's pretty much started to plateau. Take McGregor and Rousey out of the equation and the days of big MMA sales look to have been seven/eight plus years back when the likes of Lesnar, Rampage, Liddell and Ortiz were doing 1m+ PPV. Even GSP's comeback did comfortably less than, say, Canelo Chavez.

Couldn’t most boxers walk down the street unnoticed? Callum Smith, Yafai, McDonnell? Nobody would have a clue who they were.

It is getting bigger but the reason for that is because they don't bring the UFC over very often, its like the NFL or NBA , it sells out quick because the chance to see it for most people is non existent

Let’s be honest here with the exception of Anthony Joshua and maybe Amir Khan every British boxer could walk down the street and not get noticed.. We are a biased crowd in these forums and very much in the minority.. Boxing is a small sport compared to the likes of Football, Tennis, Rugby and Formula 1... I would be very confident more people would know who Andy Murray is over Anthony Joshua.. Even Darts and snooker are probably more popular than boxing

There's actually very few sportsmen outside of the most famous footballers who you'd notice walking down the street.

Really? You think your average sports fan wouldn't recognise Haye? Or Fury? I'd say these were pretty well known people.
Football is obviously light years beyond the rest but the big names in boxing have always been pretty famous. Joshua is massive but so were Hatton, Calzaghe, Lewis, Bruno, Eubank, Hamed and Benn.
A lot of it depends on if we (as in the UK) are any good at a particular sport at that period of time. Andy Murray is a proper household name but ask at the same time when the best was Jeremy Bates and you'd get plenty of blank stares.

I actually reckon that although it might not be the biggest sport in terms of tickets sold or fans that a lot of the Olympic athletes will be pretty big. Everyone must know the likes of Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis surely.

Well yeah but they're massively successful athletes who are also on TV all the time advertising Quorn or Santander.

The point I'm making is that they become famous in the Olympics as do a lot of boxers thanks to the terrestrial exposure. Khan, Joshua, even Harrison were well known before they went pro.
