Jones - Johnson Spoiler

Johnson apparently battered Jones from the first round on. Roy, who looked faded and pathetic throughout the fight, was eventually knocked unconcious by a right hand to the temple in round 9.

Looks like the Roy Jones story comes to an end in 2004...

This one's on the BBC at the typically preposterous time of half 12 in the morning. Worth setting the video for what looks like the last fight of RJJ's career.

Antonio Tarver won't like this result at all, as his victory will be tainted by this in historical terms. Unlucky Magic Man.

Don't mention Mark Johnson got ko'd as well.

Two old fighters got KO'd.

There goes one of Hopkin's potential big money fights. Hopefully Jones will do the right thing and call it a day now, his last three matches should convince him he's finished.

Clinton Woods' performances don't look to bad now do they!

The BBC coverage in one hour 30 minutes, I hope they decide to show The Flyweight fight, apparently it is a cracker. Too Sharp might be able to come again.

However, sadly - Jones is Done.

So for years people have been suggesting Jones ducks fighters, now he has faced two good fighters and been knocked out twice. There will be questions about his legacy.

any chance of Calzaghe getting a fight against either now?

Not for me, sure it would have been nice to have seen Jones up against Benn, Eubank, Collins and Michaelswecki. However, those fights were impossible to make because of the demands of their opponents. If the promoters gave way to the money demands of Collins they would have been banckrupt (Collins demanded 8 million).

Bugs, you make it sound like Tarver and Johnson are the only two decent fighters Roy has fought. That is way off - Without meaning to be disrespectful Johnson would struggle to make the top ten of Roy Jones' best opponents.

Tarver and Johnson beat Roy cause he got old.

Stu,

I was not making a judgment as such, I was simply pointing out that a lot of people (To bee honest I have not seen him fight enough to know) suggest that he has ducked good fighters where possible, and losing to two who are of a reasonably high standard in a row will highlight those questions.

I've posted a similar thing on the current scene, but I must reiterate I am shocked by how so few people saw this coming.

A SHOT ROY JONES IS COMING OFF A FREAKIN 2 ROUND KO LOSS GOING STRAIGHT IN AGAINST A PROVEN TOUGH WARRIOR WHO WOULD LEAVE HIS SOUL IN THE RING TO FUND HIS KID'S EDUCATION.

jones was obviously shot before this fight- see how decrepit he looked in the build up to tarver II. I have yet to find anyone giving a substantiated prediction of johnson winning, before the fight happened.

Fair enough, just there is always two sides to the argument - did Jones duck them, or did they make it impossible with their demands for the fight to have taken place?

Those 4 guys I mentioned IMO would have ranked just behind Hopkins and Toney in Roy's hardest opponents and its a crying shame that they were never made. However, despite this, Roy HAS fought some quality other fighters (the likes of a prime Griffin, Harding, Gonzalez etc) and beat them royally. I don't consider Tarver and Johnson as being much better than these, if they are at all.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but when Jones went up to heavyweight and challenged John Ruiz, I really fancied Ruiz to win. Decades of history were against Jones (I think Bob Fitzsimmons had been the only previous former world middleweight champ to attain the heavyweight title). Jones, of course, made it look easy. But I wonder if the move took more out of him than previously imagined. He dropped back down to light-heavy and "went" very quickly indeed.

Personally, I'm not even convinced that RJJ won the first Tarver fight.

should have been a draw.

Just think if Joe Calzaghe had fought - and beaten - Glen Johnson in June as scheduled, it could have been him destroying a shot Jones yesterday. But Calzaghe chose to pull out of the Johnson fight with a bad back and now fights an Egyptian nobody later this month.
I think it's safe to say he blew it.

Yes with hindsight that's three poor performances from Jones in a row, which means he hasn't really been the same since heavyweight. According to maxboxing Jones looked disinterested and lacklustre. He looked in tremendous shape before this fight, but it's possible he has done some sort of long lasting damage to his body bulking up to heavwyweight, maybe it was steroids, maybe he just got old overnight, and Ruiz flattered him by doing so little.

whatever the case, Jones is done, I hope he doesn't fight again, because whatever it is he's lost, he just isn't the same fighter, and he's going to lose if he fights anyone world class.

As others have said, shedding all that muscle mass after the Ruiz fight is what's ruined Roy. I saw him shortly before Tarver2 and he looked as weak as piss, almost ill. I knew then he'd never again be the Lightheavy he was. It's a shame his legacy will be tarnished by his last two fights, he's been class, and at his best I still have him in the top 10 P4P ever.

When Archie Moore fought Heavys did he bulk up as much as RRJ did?

Maybe that drug test that he failed showed up why he was so weak now

should have been a draw.

I had it down as a Jones loss, but many people thought it was a draw. I may have to study it again to see if my view needed to be revising. Jones came back strong at end, but Tarver opened up a can of whoop ass over him for several rounds. I did think at the time Jones didn't do quite enuff to win it.

Maybe after Calzaghe beats Pyramid Boy, Warren can get the Johnson - Calzaghe fight back on again. But i can see Tarver being next for Johnson really
