How Far is Devin Haney Away From a World Title Shot?

Even though he was in against a limited and much slower opponent in Mason Menard, the consensus seems to be that Devin Haney is a future world champ.

The question is how long before Haney gets his first world title shot...he's six months shy of his 20th birthday.

If he keeps looking like that won't be too long.

I say it will come at age 20 because that gives him 18 months. That's at least 4-5 fights and it's doubtful he'll need that many fights before getting a crack at a world title belt

Probably 3-4 fights from now at age 20.

2019 should be his year...could be early or mid-year. :OhYes:

Ouch, he's at LW? No titles from him. Mikey and Lomachenko spells doom for this kid's future. Worse yet, a division above has Josh Taylor and Regis Prograis waiting for him.

Highly doubtful Haney will go for Mikey or Loma in his very first world title fight!!

But he'll be ready for the likes of a Robert Easter and perhaps even a relatively slow-moving brawler like Beltran.

Both of these guys are in talks to fight Mikey and Lomachenko.

So your prediction depends on the remote possibility of Mikey & Loma unifying the belts at 135 and holding those world titles for 2 1/2 years (when Haney will still be 21). Do you honestly think 2 guys as ambitious as Garcia & Loma are going to stay at 135 for 30 more months? If you really believe that then YOU are the one living in fantasyland.

Haney wont be 22 until late 2020 and with all the belt-stripping the alphabet orgs do these days odds are very good that a vacant title at 135 will come up LONG before November 2020.

The real question is: Do you really think Devin Haney lacks world championship potential or are you just looking for an excuse to hate on the guy?

I don't think Lomachenko is moving up. He's too small for 140. Dude, you said something stupid, I caught you. Let's just leave it there. No need to try and twist it.

Haney can have all the potential he wants, but sadly, he's in the era of Mikey and Lomachenko.

Doesnt matter what you THINK. Loma is destined for greatness and is very conscious of his legacy. Win or lose vs Garcia, Loma is moving up to 140 for his 4th belt and I would love to the the Vegas odds against him needing 30 months to do it (astronomical no doubt). Garcia has already done well at 140 twice so he wont be hanging around 135 for the next 2 1/2 years either.

If Haney continues to develop he will be ready for anyone else at 135 in the next year or so. A majority of boxing fans and scribes agree with that, so it's not like I'm making some bold prediction that he will win a world time before he turns 22. You are arguing against common sense odds and even you arent denying he has world championship potential.

You're basing your whole argument on the EXTREMELY long shot that either Loma and/or Mikey are going to hold ALL world LW titles for the next 2.5 years and therefore because Haney isnt ready for them he is not going to win a world LW title by late 2020.

So we'll just have to agree to disagree and (as is so often the case with boxing arguments) we'll just need to see how this thing plays out. :TU:

If it turns out you are right about this I will be the first commenter here to give you kudos. Hopefully if you turn out to be the one who's wrong on this then you will be man enough to do the same for me. :OhYes:

incidentally beltrans ktfo of menard was f@cking brutal

devin haney may well be ready for a shot before he actually gets one. seems for a lot of hot prospects it usually the case that there team talks up a world title fight in the next year but usually happens later.

with haney already being 19-0 and that good performance in the step up i can definitely see within the next 2 years though. i dont think either mikey or loma stay at 135 for too long, at least not on a consistent basis. im not sure on loma moving to 140 for long either though, hes small already at 135 and could also drop down to 130 for the likes of berchelt or davis. i can see him hopping around.

You could be onto something!! :OhYes:

I think Haney is a more complete fighter than his amateur rival Ryan Garcia at this point, but because of Garcia's Golden Boy connection, Ryan could be getting a world title shot BEFORE Haney.

After 18 fights against opponents not ranked in the top 100 he just beat Mason Menard ranked 47.

That moves him just outside the independent top 50.

He needs 6-8 more learning fights.

Or just inside the top 50...BoxRec rankings has him at #46. Menard was a BIG jump for Devin over any precious fights, so I expect him to face top 30 foes in his next couple fights.

Probably needs another 2-3 fights before he goes after a top 15-20 guy, so I'll stick with the 4-5 fights maximum I said earlier in the thread. That would put him in for a title shot by late 2019/early 2020 barring injury or anything else that could slow his development.
