Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-3-1, 32 KOs) is putting together a new plan of attack for the future.

The Mexican boxer has been inactive since May of 2017, when he lost a very one-sided decision to country rival Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

A few years ago, a fight between Chavez and middleweight king Gennady Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) was in serious discussions.

But then Chavez had a contractual dispute with Top Rank and a contest with Golovkin was placed on the backburner.

Chavez said he will return to the ring at the end of July or in August against someone like Gabriel Rosado or Sergio Mora.

And after two or three fights, he would like to once again explore a fight with Golovkin.

"At this point in my career I do not like to say names, it is well known that if you say names it could cause issues in the the negotiation, but names have been mentioned like Sergio Mora, Gabriel Rosado - fighters who have been ranked and have fought for a world championships. I will gladly fight with any of them. I have never said no to any opponent. The most important thing is to stay active and be in the best moment of my career," Chavez Jr. told ESPN Deportes.

"I would like to face [Golovkin], at my weight logically and doing two fights before that. I need to do two or three fights to reach the top of my physical capacity and be active to reach my best moment, and then grab a major fight - which could be Golovkin. I think if I take that fight, it would be to win it and not just to fight him."

He hasn't fought now in over a year. By time he announces a fight now, he'll likely fight in the fall. He was supposed to have fought by the end of last year I remember. But he's just stalling.

Junior is starting to remind me of Fury. He always talks about fighting, but it's impossible to get him into the gym, much less the ring.

His father recently said that Junior is a little overweight, which undoubtedly means the kid is around 225.

If he has even one fight in 2018, then consider it a busy year for Chavez.

Yeah, I'm sure those 2-3 fights will leapfrog you ahead of real contenders like Derevyanchenko, Charlo, Jacobs, Murata, Saunders, etc. I'm sure you're going to be the man to fight and Golovkin will be begging for a fight by then.

Irrelevant or not, the bout still attracted more than 1 million buys.

Na. That got 1 million because it was 2 Mexicans fighting. Plus after seeingthat performance, people would have been turned off. Maybe people will buy it to see him get KTFO.

Jr is still young enough to do something with his career if he is motivated enough. It will take some doing to convince all those people who paid their hard earned for the Canelo fight.

Senior's legacy is hardly tarnished or enhanced by what his son's do.

They're men. They're their own person, sink or swim.

It's very egotistical of dad to wrap his own legacy around the success or failure of his offspring.

I think everyone realized that when his son's took up boxing, it was unlikely they would match senior's talent or exploits.

Few sons turn out to be on the same level in boxing as their famous fathers.

Mayweather is a rare exception.

I agree. There are the fans who will follow a recognisable name though, look to Eubank and Benn, would they have put as many bums on seats as their fathers with names like Smith or Jones. Actually Smith isn't a good example
In the case of Chavez (and Mexican rabid fandom) what Jr gets up to in and out of the ring does reflect back on his father. I say that because all the news articles, positive and negative, about Jr usually mention "son of" etc.

But despite his kid-like looks and behavior, Junior is 32 years old. Closer to middle age than being a rambunctious youngster.

Rational people shouldn't allow Junior's behavior or lack of solid ring accomplishment to reflect in any way on dad.

Being the son of a former great is a huge burden to carry in any sport. Though it usually opens doors for you early days, later on it can be like carrying a piano around wherever you go and no matter what you achieve.

In contrast his brother Omar has been able build a career in relative obscurity. Nobody thinks twice about an Omar Chavez.

Junior thrived and eventually dived because of the name. Omar isn't anything spectacular, but he can't possibly feel the pressure that's been placed on Junior.

Junior's sole reward for carrying a legend's name has been the size of his paychecks

I don't see how 2-3 losses is going to help maneuver him towards a fight with Golovkin.

He has had about 10 pro fights and a very short amateur career before that, and people are already asking oh, but is he going to be as good as his father?

Have you seen him?

Can he fight. I see he's unbeaten but of course it's early and the opposition is soft.

I read that Tszyu has challenged Mundine to a showdown. Sons getting it on.

Mundine is a little long in the tooth by now, so if Tszyu was the real deal maybe he could pull it off.

But the experience edge for Mundine would be massive.

Yes, l have watched a few of his fights. It is early days for him and he is fighting chosen opponents so far with his inexperience in mind.

IMO he is no way ready for someone of Mundine's experience.

I'll have to check out some of Tszyu's fights on You Tube.

I was a big fan of his father.

The Mundine fight does seem a stretch at this stage of Tszyu's career, even if Mundine is now in his 40s.

Please tell me that no one's going to fall for this one again. JCCJR was fun to watch at one brief moment in his career but I don't care to see this spoiled trust fund punk in the ring again.

It's remarkable how much Mexico loves JCCSR that they will continue to treat JR like a rock star after being so embarrassingly outclassed in his three biggest fights. I'd be generous to give him 2 rounds out of those 3 fights. Mexico has way too many super fighters to be excited about right now to invest in this chump again.
