I think Billy Graham is more underrated. He rarely gets the credit he deserves. The uncrowned MW champ!

Yes he did, and yes I'm biased! There...I said it!

I have to say.....I'm smiling, and sort of celebrating the fact that someone brought up a name from the past.....(and honestly Joey's a respectable fighter with a respectable career. ) With that said....no one beat the doors down, and rushed in to tear him down in writing, and tell us every weakness and flaw, and call him some palooka.

On balance, I personally think the big names he beat were fellas who had seen the autumn of their careers....so as a result he may have a shine to his body of work that probably is a bit higher wattage than he deserves. And I think the media sort of liked him, so they touted him a bit much. But I'm not going to tear him down for that....just point out some of the nuances of a distinguished career.

He might actually be a bit over rated in his own time....maybe a bit under rated these days.

Giardello was a skillful boxer with a rational style based on movement. He was clearly a top in his times with a solid resume and a highlight of the career with capturing the MW championship by outboxing Tiger, who was a truly big name in the MW history. Joey probably could have all the rights to be in the all time top 20 rankings.

I think years back RING MAGAZINE ranked him #20 of the top 20 middleweights of all time. It's probably a fitting ranking. There's a few guys that are honorable mentions within a hairs breadth of Giardello like "The Phantom of Saint Paul" Mike Gibbons the brother of Tommy Gibbons who was one of the best welterweight and middleweight fighters never to win a world title.

You are correct, he was 20. As I recall, they noted that his inconsistency prevented him from being rated higher. Those honorable mentions were a great group as well and I could see any or all of them nudging Giardello. Even with that, he would be in the top 30 and that is a high honor among the 160 pounders.

Giardello at is best is underrated. The problem he had was that he was maddeningly inconsistent. He hated to train and sometimes even in condition he underperformed and lost to guys he should have beat.

And no, he wasn’t as good or as important a figure as Mike Gibbons.

I had him #16 when I did a Top middleweight list. There are several fighters behind him that are very close that could be a head of him.
There really was not any one thing that particularly impressive about him but he was pretty well-rounded.
He had a hard career to evaluate. He fought very frequently and had a ton of fights against good competition in a very deep era in his division. He won some of those fights and lost some.

I think the middleweight division has to be the most stacked..

Harry Greb, Bob Fitzsimmons, and Sugar Ray Robinson are all probably top 5 P4P and spent large parts of their career as middleweights. Then Sam Langford and Ezzard Charles are fought at the weight.
