Did anyone see this fight, or learn the details? I know that Jones won a unanimous decision. I also know that Denis allegedly broke his clavicle bone. But I don't know any of the tactical details, such as how the fight unfolded. Can anyone fill me in?

I remember that this bout was listed in TV Guide as being one of the matches on that Sunday afternoon that would be broadcast to the public. But television never showed it. The boxing magazines barely mentioned anything about fight, except what I've related above.

Ron, the Jones - Denis bout was quarterfinal bout in Don King's aborted United States Boxing Championships series on ABC. And being such, I'm fairly certain that it was definitely televised as were the three others at heavyweight ( Johnny Boudreaux W8 Scott Ledoux, Stan Ward W8 Kevin Isaac & Larry Holmes W8 Tom Prater ). I also remember seeing some highlights of it in the pre-fight buildup to Jones challenge of Larry Holmes for the 'BC title in early 1980.
If memory serves me right it was a fairly entertaining bout with Jones as the aggressor & using his size advantage & quicker hands to outwork Denis over the distance. I also remember there being some damage done to Denis's eye(s) in the form of cuts and/or swelling.

Sweetviolent: Thanks for the feedback. However, I am 100% certain that this fight was not broadcast on that Sunday afternoon, March 27th, 1977. I sat in front of the TV eagerly anticipating Jones vs. Denis, but ABC simply didn't show it. They televised David Love knocking out Bobby Watts, and the highlights of Vonzell Johnson's KO over Tony Greene. A lighter weight fight was broadcast as well. But no Jones vs. Denis.

After losing this fight, Denis drifted into obscurity for a few years. I guess DKP lost interest in building him up.

Huh, how bizarre. I would have thought that they would have shown the fight but I'll take your word for it as you tuned in that day & I didn't. I remember seeing some of the US Championship cards but not all of them. And I could have sworn that they played a snippet of Jones vs Denis during the pre-fight build-up to the Holmes - Jones bout but according to this near complete video of the fight ( complete with pre-fight interviews ) I was wrong. Maybe it was just a very vivid still of the fight that I remember seeing. Now I'm unsure.
