In a recent one on one training session with former two-weight champion Nigel Benn, Dillian Whyte has revealed some behind-the-scenes details from the Lucas Browne fight.
The retired boxer went to visit current heavyweight contender at his Brixton gym to have a session on the pads, and afterwards the two fighters got chatting Whyte's recent victory over Browne.
Both men have served bans from the sport for drug-related charges, although Whyte's came in much more unfortunate circumstances than the controversial Browne.
And Whyte revealed that as part of the fight negotiations a clause was inserted to ensure they both took a post-bout drugs test.
Failure to do so would have meant a £50k payment to the other fighter.
However, given the brutal nature of the knockout suffered by Browne, he was obviously unable to provide a sample immediately after the fight.
But it turns out that although Whyte should have technically taken home an extra £50,000 that night, he graciously waived the clause.
"In the contract, Lucas Browne asked for a clause: anyone who leaves the venue without getting drug-tested pays 50 grand. He got knocked out and he couldn't take the drug test.
"My lawyers wanted to get the 50 grand but I said no. Give the 50 grand to Lucas. He deserved it, he came to the venue, he fought and did well.
"I could have got 50 grand off him but I said no. The man's a warrior. I've got nothing but respect for him but when I'm fighting you I ain't got no respect for you."

seems like a pretty sloppy contract to not include provisions for stuff like if a fighter is injured and cant take the test right away
i guess maybe then you could say some guys would find a way to get out of taking the test? but then again knockouts and injury are so common in boxing that it just seems sort of stupid to me that browne would be responsible for a clause that would cause him to pay 50k basically because he was knocked out so bad

A combination of sloppy and then snide of the same solicitors to pick this up after very difficult circumstances.

Classy move. Article could have been a little clearer with it's referencing. Spent a minute or so trying to work out if I remember a Nigel Benn drugs ban.

Doubt many people would have ever found out. Even then if he takes it he's got the excuse of 'someone else deals with my financials' which, to be fair, is probably correct.
Fair play to him.

Yeh. Had he taken it, he would never have mentioned it himself.

Exactly. The fact that he even made this public and looked for good publicity out of it is a turn off.

Had someone else mentioned it? Or if he told Nigel Benn behind closed doors, not on camera and Benn then later (not that it's his business) told the public?

Good point.
All this "what a good chap" stuff is bollox.
The essence of the contract is that he would get a purse of £x and if the opponent failed a test he would get another £50k.
To try to get credit for not asking for the £50k under the circumstances that Browne was unable to take the test seems snide to me.

The extra £50k was if either boxer didn't take a test. Regardless of pass/fail. They just had to take a post-fight test. However Browne was taken straight to hospital. Also according to Whyte, it was Browne who wanted the clause in the contract. But that's just according to Whyte. It might have been a mutual decision.
