Lloyd at his peak there, hitting so hard that his hands eventually couldn’t take it any more.
He was truly a vicious SOB, but showed compassion that night as the dumb ass ref was slow to save the stricken American, who was about to have his head taken off, but Lloyd turned away and did the refs job that night.
My perplexed mate, who knew nothing about boxing and I had dragged along to the fight, pretty much missed it as he settled in for the fight and reached down for his beer, looked at me and said “is that it!?”

They had another dumb referee in the Bruno-Reggie Gross encounter on the same show (or it may have been the same one). Lawless branded him "a disgrace" to his face. Hatcher, by the way, is now a priest.

I remember settling down to watch that fight only to be told last minute that it had been cancelled until the next day,no internet or anything those days so we had no idea there was a massive storm and the bull ring was swamped.

Funny to read that as I was thinking how underrated he is now. Hardly gets a mention in great British fighters.

His win over Curry was immense and he was on fire that night. But if you look at his record apart from Curry he has a points win over Blocker and not too much else.
He was obviously a good fighter but his record falls short for me.

That’s a matter of opinion though isn’t it. I don’t see many top guys that he beat.
How do you rank Hatton and McGuigan?
Both excellent fighters but again if we are looking at resumè and wins then Hatton get’s the nod for a stronger record. Hatton has some good wins but it’s not a stellar record either.
I think Kell Brook is a great fighter, very talented but his resumè is very weak. I think he’s a better fighter than Amir Khan, but Khan has a superior record in terms of wins.
Which UK fighter has the best record in terms of wins? Froch? Calzaghe? Lewis?

Honeyghan has some good wins, aside from the obvious Curry win, Bumphus, Blocker, Hatcher and Rosi were all title holders at some point, not stellar victories or an all time great resume but a very solid respectable record.

I remember when he beat Curry and made a few defenses, destroying Bumphus in the process ( Bumphus never fought again after that)
Then he fought Vaca who was a limited slugger but tough as nails. I couldn’t believe it when he lost the fight on points after the he cuts took it to the cards.
I always had the impression he was not as committed to training as he should have been but maybe I’m wrong

You might be right about the first Vaca fight. He was very sluggish. I think he overlooked him a lot.
Put the record right in the rematch though. Mark of a great fighter.

To be honest Lloyd was lucky he wasn't disqualified in the Bumphus fight, he ran across the ring and twatted him while he was still sat down
Pretty sure he took out the Korean fella with a low blow as well.
