Just ratings. Don't get shook up.

What's important is what you accomplish in the ring. Not someone's personal opinion of where you belong.

Don't respect the rankings here.

The site is brilliant for weirdos like me who pour over old fights but the rankings are just a guideline for names. They're not to be taken seriously.

Pretty much this, all the way. You'd get laughed on any decently knowledgeable forums following these ratings like a bible.

You probably don't think this is a repost, but this is literally a repost. There is an older thread complaining about Bellew's rating.

The ratings are fun for weirdos like us, but bellew (sorry about the pun) is All Time HWs.

You're reading along minding your own business and some of it makes sense and then you see where James Toney is. :-x

I don't see him on the P4P top 50 list. Maybe my eyes just didn't pick it up.

When fighters move divisions, their points are translated to the new division. This has always been the major hang-up that people have with these types of rating systems. You can't just say that every boxer starts at 0 when they move divisions.. it doesn't work that way.

lol

Last time I checked, the all-time formula rewarded fighters for longevity. It was like... each year of your career, if you are at least X good, then you get some more points. So Toney, with his 29-year career, obviously benefited from that. Btw, that's a very long career.

Yeah, Patterson use to be even higher for that reason. Toney was a very good fighter, but such a small % of it was as a HW. Guess he gets a lot of credit for beating Holyfield. Computer didn't pick up how passed his prime Evander was.

No, not really. It doesn't tell apart robberies, and I think it gives too much credit for losses. For some reason, Charles Martin is rated in the top 15 above Kabayel, Fury, Charr, and Takam. No one giving you a respectable ratings would put Martin in the top 15.

boxrec ratings are best used at a general level to get a broad sense of who is where, but there are certainly cases like bellew where the ranking is obviously off

most rankings have some oddities though, transnational had nate gallimore as high as 4 in the world at 154 and pbo had zimnoch oddily high at hw etc
