Michael Venom Page

I see the MMA star has another boxing match set for today, albeit against another absolute trashcan. Curious to me Bellator is actually allowing him to box. What kind of contract is that? He's one of their most prized fighters and ticket sellers. Very weird. What can be gained here?

Dunno. I thought he looked crap.

I don't follow MMA, but I thought I heard he was a bit of a hypejob

There are not a lot of primarily MMA fighters who have a particularly good boxing background. I can see the value in promoting an MMA fighter who also has an X-0 boxing record and specializes in boxing as his primary style. There are plenty of MMA fighters who were successful in amateur wrestling, jujitsu, or kickboxing in their past life. Not many former boxers, other than like Ray Mercer. And so far, they're only matching Michael Page with corpses, so he hasn't been risking much just yet. Plus, Bellator struggles to make as much money and have as many top p4p fighters as the UFC, so it would be sensible for them to work gimmicks to get their revenue and audience up.

Plus, we've seen a lot of cross-promotional events that potentially improved a fighter's drawing power or earned them a big check, like Holyfield, Tyson, and Mayweather participating in pro wrestling events, McGregor competing in boxing, Brock Lesnar competing in MMA, James Toney competing in MMA, Antonio Inoki vs Muhammad Ali in a mixed-rules match, MMA fighters like Ken Shamrock and Ronda Rousey joining pro wrestling, etc.

In the MMA world, MVP is the real deal. I haven't seen him box, but I feel his style won't transfer well in the upper echelon on the boxing world.

No he's not. He signed to Bellator 5 years ago and is still fighting cans.

Most in the MMA community feel MVP is the most important fighter outside the UFC that Dana needs to sign ASAP...

He has fought decent competition when talking Bellator. Rickels is a tough fighter and MVP completely demoralized him. Did a better job than Chandler. And Chandler is another one that should be in the UFC.

I'm surprised MVP is not in the UFC yet. The guy is a complete showman with an extremely exciting fighting style.

He’s fought nobody who would be in the top 25 of his division in the UFC. He hasn’t even fought the very few top level guys in Bellator.

David Rickels is considered a gatekeeper at WW in Bellator.

He is a bit of a hypejob. He's been a pro for 6+ years, perfect 13-0 record, and the only time he fought someone worth a damn he stunk the joint out and squeaked by with a razor-thin victory where he danced around did basically nothing for 3 rounds.

I've never seen MVP spoken of that highly. He's an exciting prospect who's been pro for 6 years without much substance. His win against Rickels basically showed he's not completely manufactured.

Rickels is a can at this point. He was briefly a fringe contender at 155 like 3-4 years ago, but he's never had a meaningful win at 170 and has been brutally KO'd like 5 times now.

MVP's career has been pretty disappointing so far. He's already 31, it's not like he's in his early 20s and has time to develop. Just put him in with Daley already and get it over with.

I wouldn't call him a can, but he's basically the less talented and less accomplished Clay Guida of Bellator.

Guida is a much, much higher level fighter than Rickels. Guida cracked the top 10 of 2 different weight classes for multiple years. Rickels has never so much as sniffed the top 10 of any weight class.

I meant current form Guida--the one fighting on fight pass. I already covered the rest with less talented and less accomplished.

I'd say even modern day Guida beats Rickels pretty easily at 155.

I don't really understand what the MVP promotional plan is. He's 31, it's sink or swim time. What's the point in wasting time with meaningless boxing matches against Z-list no-hopers?

Guida would shut Rickels out.

I think they are trying to milk everything they can out of the MVP hype train. I don't think they've given him much in the way of top opposition because they don't want to "force" him into a title shot. Lima, Koreshkov, and Rory have held the titles in the time MVP has been in Bellator and I doubt he'd beat any of them. They're just making money and trying to build some superstars. It's time for MVP and Daley though.

What happened to Page, two pro fights, one in 2017 and one in 2018 but nothing since?

He got banned cuz Adam Smith announced his last fight and said something like, "He has venom running through his veins and is a danger to society."

Something along those lines.

He's stayed active in MMA. Crushed 3 cans in the last few months of 2019, which is pretty much his MO in general.

I saw he got knocked out too. Is he still active as a MMA fighter as his Twitter page makes no mention of him fighting anymore?
