The odd career of ST Gordon

Post by sweetviolenturge »

I first saw ST Gordon on a CBS broadcast of his prelim bout vs a young Gerry Cooney in which both men looked atrocious. Cooney not only towered over Gordon but outweighed him by about 35 - 40 pounds. Gordon, a smallish cruiserweight did the best that he could under the circumstances but soon became exhausted by Cooney's roughhouse tactics. Which was pretty much the only thing effective that Cooney did during the course of the contest as he attempted to chase Gordon down. Unfortunately for Gordon the referee grew tired of the sloppy affair & somewhat unfairly disqualified Gordon in the fourth round of the rather comical bout.
The next time that Gordon appeared on network television was when he'd earned a cruiserweight title shot against Carlos "Sugar" Deleon. who he KO'd in the second round to become the WBC champion. After which he was matched with heavyweight contender Trevor Berbick who bizarrely failed to fight during the course of their ten round contest. A deadly dull affair in which barely any punches were thrown by either man. But, Gordon did own what little action took place & won via a wide decision.
Fast forward to the next time that he was on TV & this time it was Gordon who was strangely uncombative & ineffectual in his rematch vs "Sugar" Deleon. Gordon hardly landed a punch over the course of the fight & lost a shut-out decision over twelve rounds. Relinquishing his title to the Puerto Rican with barely an effort.
So, other than his KO2 over Deleon, his appearances on network television were some of the most bizarre & dull fights ever televised.

If you saw the Cooney fight, it was almost inconceivable that he amounted to half of what he did.

I have no idea why he disappeared after losing the Cruiserweight Title rematch to DeLeon, but it was like he never existed. No trace, like last night's thunderstorm.
