In your opinion, how good was former IBF Cruiserweight Champion Lee Roy Murphy? Did he fought like Matthew Saad Muhammad by absorbing a beating before rallying back to win the fight? His fight with Zambian Chisandra Mutti was memorable and Murphy pulled a Rocky II moment when he retained his title after scoring a double knockdown. How good was "Solid Gold" Lee Roy Murphy?

I remember following Murphy's career when he was an amateur when he appeared on network television often in national tournaments & in international competition. He was a heavy-handed banger with some boxing skills.
Then, I saw his first couple of pro fights on early Top Rank Boxing telecasts on ESPN back in 1980. Unfortunately, after those bouts, he fought the vast majority of his career off TV. Other than some highlights of his fight with Mutti on the news he wasn't seen again until his bout with Dwight Qawi on Showtime. And that was pretty much it for him.

Heard a lot about him in the amateurs, beat Tony Tucker and later on earning a shot on the Olympic team for 1980. A couple things here and there in the mags and that's it. Good fighter, not particularily great.

Thanks for replying to my question and I wonder how he would do against Holyfield, DeLeon and Camel?

Solid enough pug. Like most he lacked the mysterious intangibles of greatness.

Putting my neck on the line here, but... I think Murphy would beat Marvin Camel, the bout being stopped after 14 rounds because of cuts. Camel would be ahead on the scorecards at the time.

My bad, I forgot that Murphy stopped Camel to win the IBF Cruiserweight title. How about how would Murphy fare against Ossie Ocasio?
