Trey Lippe v Byron Polley

by Mimmy
Trey out on Saturday at Chesapeake Energy Arena, Oklahoma City, against journeyman Byron Polley who has very little resistance.
Byron has fought a few up and comers including Luiz Ortiz, Charles Martin and has competed in a world title fight for the WBE Heavyweight title, but hell knows who the WBE are.
Anyway, as Polley has absolutely no resistance I cannot see this fight going more than 120 seconds.
Glad to see Trey out now after his injury and 1 fight back but he needs something better after this as hes not going to progress fighting these kind of boxers.

I hope, the fight will leak in the internet contrary to the last one. It's interesting to see him after the time off.

He should really be fighting better boxers than Polley at this stage. Let's hope he steps it up soon.

Wow. . . that tells you what Lippe-Morrison's management thinks about him as a credible contender.

These types of fights against cannon fodder like Polly aren't doing anything aside from fattening his record up. He's certainly not learning anything while belting these types of opponents out in a round or two. So, they really should step up his level of opposition soon. There are plenty of guys available who would give him more rounds & allow him to gain more valuable experience against them. His people just need to be willing to take the risk of stepping up his quality of opponents.

Wow this should be a cracking fight. I've waited a long time to see this one.
Yes I'm lying, you got me.

Trey started boxing at like 23 or 24 years old and has (to my knowledge) no amateur experience. He's only got 22 rounds under his belt as a pro. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this fight. If he wasn't Tommy Morrison's son no one would care about his opponent in his 15th fight after missing time with a broken hand.
Frankly he's not ready to step up in competition. He's a beginner who has good power; but he's still a beginner. He needs a lot of work, and given his lack of experience he's still at the point where that work should be coming in the gym. Build his record, get him confidence and exposure (this is what, his fourth of fifth fight outside of the same casino in Florida...) and let him learn. Great fight for a inexperienced puncher.

Not as pointless as feeding an inexperienced hobby boxer to a tough test before he's close to being ready just because his dad had a great left hook.
There is a huge difference between a boxer like Lippe and somebody like Yoka/Hrgovic/Joyce etc. Some of you all don't seem to realize that.

I think that if they really believe in this kid though they should step his opposition up to the level of the Rodney Hernandez & Jamal Woods of the world though. Guys that will take him some rounds & won't fold up immediately the minute that he touches them.

He can learn the ropes in the gym sparring with crafty vets. It's 2018 and a glossy record is worth more now than ever before. He has no amateur experience, doesn't appear to be very skilled from what I've seen. He has two things going for him: his record and his late father. If he were a (even somewhat) accomplished amateur I'd agree with you; but I don't think any of us expect him to end up contending for a world title. He has 14 fights in his entire life; Byron Polley would not be a bad opponent although I see it's been removed from the schedule.

I believe the fight is still a go as they both weighed in earlier tonight & posed for photos which are up over at BS.com. Judging by the shape that Polly is in ( or, more accurately, isn't ) it shouldn't get out of the first round.

Trey has already fought a much more threatening opponent than Byron Polley, last year. Ed Latimore was 13 and 0 with a respectable amateur record and might even have been a slight favourite to beat Trey (Please correct me if you know better)
He couldn't take Trey's power and didn't see round two. I'm not going to dis Trey for fighting Polley, he's been out of the ring for quite a while, but I'm hoping that having felt his way back with this one he'll be ready for another more exacting test next time out. The clock's a ticking.

He gave Trey 3 rounds and kept getting up after knock downs. Trey is still green.

This was a perfect fight for him. Glad to see he got a few rounds while going for the knockout.

I was wondering if he hurt his left hand as he was mostly throwing right hands. He did start throwing some left hooks in the 3rd.

If they're really interested in building him up as a legit fighter as opposed to just booking him with fighters that he can continue to knock out then they should match him with someone like a fighter that you mentioned earlier, Avery Gibson. He's a tough, well-schooled young journeyman that would give him a decent test & take him deep if not the full distance. Something that would benefit Lippe-Morrison a great deal at this point.
What do you think? Good match-up at this point or too much too soon?

Both really. If Gibson had the backing and had been able to learn to box without having to worry first about working full time to earn a living ... then taking fights as an opponent on the weekend, then Avery might even be a contender. As it is he's been thrown in deep water to sink or swim and he's proved himself nobody's pushover even while learning the ropes. I really admire fighters like Gibson.
He would be an ambitious and risky opponent to be sure, but the Latimore fight shows Trey isn't averse to taking the odd risky fight. He needs to start moving beyond the Byron Polleys now if he intends to do anything in boxing. He is no longer a young man in boxing terms.

Trey possesses power. Well, that has actually been seen before.
