Kevin Cunningham is going to be a busy man on July 28th.

The world class trainer has advised BS.com that the welterweight bout between former champions Devon Alexander (27-4-1) and Andre Berto will take place on the Mikey Garcia-Robert Easter Jr. lightweight unification card at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Both fights will be televised by Showtime.

In addition to being in Easter's corner, Cunningham is the long time trainer of Alexander who held titles at both super lightweight and welterweight.

If fans doze off during this co-feature, they might miss Mikey giving Easter an overdue spanking.

I genuinely didn't know, but when someone mentioned it as the Garcia-Easter undercard I knew there must've been a mistake.

For the record I'd favor Alexander by Decision, but I'd rather see Berto win by KO. They're both about equally mediocre in terms of talent, but Berto is more entertaining to watch.

Winner gets back into the Top 15...for a little while anyway, until somebody bumps 'em off again for their name value.

Alexander-Berto to Headline at Nassau Coliseum on August 4th

Multiple sources close to the situation have informed Boxingtalk that former welterweight champions Andre Berto and Devon Alexander, a two division champion, will square off in the main event of a Showtime Boxing telecast from Nassau Coliseum on August 4th. Peter Quillin vs. J'Leon Love and another Marcus Browne mismatch are expected to round off the telecast.

Why was it moved off the Garcia-Easter card?

Perhaps there was another fight planned for Aug. 4 that fell through so SHOWTIME wants to fill that date with Alexander/Berto.

Devon Alexander's matchmaking is kind of clever, as far as creating lucrative, seemingly relevant match-ups that aren't unduly risky. If he fought the guys ranked right next to Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto, he'd probably make 10% as much as if he fought Ortiz and Berto themselves, and we would also only care about 15% as much.

The only thing is, it's stagnating the ability for the next generation to get name recognition. Fighters like Yordenis Ugas, Kudratillo Abdukakhorov, and Jamal James are better than Alexander, Ortiz, and Berto; and they deserve to be catching wins against these kinds of opponents. But the previous class of name welterweights are not playing ball (understandably).

Well, anyways, I think Berto beats Alexander. He got a much clearer win over common opponent Ortiz, and he gave Mayweather a lot of trouble.

Since losing his first fight to Ortiz 7 years ago, Berto has been wholly uninspiring.

Win one or two, lose one or two.

He just hasn't been able to get his career on track.

I suppose his KO win over Ortiz in the rematch was clearer, but it probably says more about Ortiz then it does Berto.

He was manhandled by Porter last year and we haven't seen him since.

Alexander is no ball of fire and I certainly won't be stunned if Berto beats him.

But overall I just see more consistency out of Alexander, and that should lead to a dull decision victory.

Berto vs. Alexander, Quillin vs. Love Set Down For August 4th

Former welterweight champions Devon Alexander and Andre Berto will headline a FOX broadcast August 4 from Uniondale, New York.

The card was officially announced Thursday morning by Premier Boxing Champions. The telecast headlined by Alexander (27-4-1, 14 KOs) and Berto (31-5, 24 KOs) will air from Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The broadcast, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT, also will include a super middleweight bout between former WBO middleweight champ Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (33-1-1, 23 KOs) and J’Leon Love (24-1-1, 13 KOs).

This August 4 card will begin with a special edition of “PBC on Fox Sports 2” at 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. PT. That portion of the telecast will feature unbeaten light heavyweight contender Marcus Browne and former WBA welterweight champ Luis Collazo.

Browne (21-0, 16 KOs), a 2012 American Olympian from Staten Island, is set to face the Dominican Republic’s Lenin Castillo (18-1-1, 13 KOs) in a 10-rounder. Brooklyn’s Collazo (37-7, 20 KOs) is set to battle Bryant Perrella (15-1, 13 KOs), of Fort Myers, Florida, in another 10-round bout.

I'm kinda siding with Alexander.

Berto has said he now fights with no pressure and trains like he did 10 years ago. He probably know he won't be challenging for a world title again. The $4m he got vs. Mayweather is and always will be his biggest payday.
