In a recent report he was back in the gym, calling out hopkins, saying he was the WBO champ.

A guy was killed in the car crash and he was facing a sentence as well as a long physical rehabilitation process, i doubt he will ever be back.

I'd almost like to see Simon get a shot at Hopkins just to get the beat-down he deserves.

He was better than "half decent", a heavy handed accurate boxer, used to box in a relaxed style.
He was better as a light middle, defeated Winky Wright on a decision, so that shows what level he could box at.
Also stopped both Lueshing and Alexander when they challanged for his WBO Light Middle title, got caught with a few bombs from both on the way to victory, so chin was ok as well.
Didn't seem as strong when he stepped up to middleweight, but was still undefeated WBO champ when he had his car accident.
The critisism against him was that in some bouts he appeared lazy, doing just enough to win, If he was fit today i could see him pushing Hopkins hard in a title fight, would probaly lose on points.

I saw him on Wednesday at Dennie Mancini's funereal. Strange seeing him there, as I don't recall any association with Dennie. Do correct me if I'm wrong.

Not sure where he is but as long as he's not in my rear-view mirror I don't care... 
He's a very good fighter and a couple of years ago you have to put him up there with the likes of Trinidad/Mosley/De La Hoya/Wright (and now his win over him makes Simon look even better).
Very strong all-rounder who always got the job done. I'd say he's probably finished now though. He's not boxed for ages and I've heard the guy's a bit of a party animal.
Watched him train in the gym once in Camden and he looked brilliant on the pads and he wasn't even really trying.
In his fight with Wayne Alexander he didn't even move into third gear and still comfortably beat him and Wayne threw everything at him in those first few rounds. Not too many take Wayne's hardest shots and hardly move (although he did wobble a bit from a big right in the second if I remembe correctly).
If ever the term box-puncher sums someone up it has to be Simon. Excellent fighter and I remembe Brian Mitchell telling me he could give the likes of De La Hoya a run for his money – but he never really got the chance.

Simon had it all physically....
good punch
great chin
great stamina
great workrate
good accuracy
however he went really heavy between fights (alcohol I guess) and we all know what happened when he got behind the wheel of a car.
I guess its the classis case of someone who came from nothing to being rich and famous in the space of a couple of years....
He would have beaten Oscar and Tito at light middle in my opinion...

I was a regular visitor to the Lonsdale Shop in Soho, and I had many a chat with Dennie, who always made time for me, even if he was busy. We'd see each other at most of the London shows, and have a natter. So I felt I ought to pay my respects to him, as he would often go out of his way to make me feel welcome. There were quite a few people there who just knew him as a friend, not just those associated with him on a business level.

I think Lonsdale has been bought by Lillywhites. Staff aren't too happy about it, from what I heard.
