According to several outlets, two-time Olympic gold medal winner Robeisy Ramirez abandoned Cuba’s national team during a training camp in Mexico.
The Cuban Sports Institute reported the information on Thursday.
Ramirez, 24, won a bantamweight gold medal in the 2016 Olympics in Rio, and a flyweight gold medal in the 2012 games in London. He beat Shakur Stevenson in the final round of their 2016 games.
It's not clear what Ramirez plans to do. In previous interviews, he discussed the intention to fight for Cuba in the 2020 Olympics - but now it appears that he's likely going to turn pro.
Cuba has won more Olympic gold medals in boxing than any other country.
In March, the Cuban team suffered another big hit with flyweight Joahnys Argilagos, 21, running away from the team during a tournament in Mexico.
In the past, Cuban boxing champions who defected to compete professionally included Guillermo Rigondeaux, Erislandy Lara and Luis Ortiz.

Nice...especially the fact that he is only 24. Rigo was already 28 when he turned pro, Ortiz was 30 and at 24 Ramirez is one of the youngest big-name Cuban defectors.
Hopefully we'll see him punching for pay in the near future.

I posted this on another forum recently:
I'm excited. Hopefully he gets a good team behind him to keep him in check. Word is he isn't the most dedicated trainer. Likes to live the good life, and that desire could be amped up in the states if he decides to fight here. That said, he's certainly shown up when it counted. Not the most naturally/physically talented Cuban amateur I've seen, but he's one of the most versatile stylists among them. Not a one trick pony like some of the others, and his skills seem very well suited to the pro game. Let's see what he does.

This is big news. Ramirez is outstanding amateur, i am not afraid to say he is on Lomachenko level at amateurs. What is more important, unlike many other cuban amateur boxers, he is very entertaining to watch. Looking forward to this one

Wonder who ends up signing him. Needs to go with TR or GB imo. They are the only two in the US who know how to promote hispanic fighters.

Me too!
Let's hope he gets the right promoter and they don't muck around too much with building a paper resume. A few 6-8 round fights, getting used to the pro scene, and then move onto B level fighters and belt opportunities.

Joahnys Argilagos, Olympic Bronze medallist (who fled as Ramirez) now is in Houston, and making progress in his legalization in us and is in the process of turning pro. Erislandy Lara is being as a mentor for him.

Hello, any news on this guy ? cannot wait at his pro debut
I just done a search. no updates as of yet.
Sad to hear that, i cannot find anything too. I know cuban boxers are hard to sell in pro ranks, but this one is very entertaining to watch. He fought at top level for many years, including WSB. Maybe with Lomachenko qualities

Stevenson fought good, but Ramirez won that match clearly. Not every close fight must be a robbery
