Is AJ The Biggest British Ticket Seller Ever?

I can't think of any other British boxer that sold the tickets that AJ does. When Bruno fought McCall, it didn't exactly fill Wembley. If Henry Cooper had won the world title, he might have filled stadiums. Naz didn't, Khan doesn't. Lennox didn't. Hatton didn't.

Is there anyone?

AJ is certainly the biggest British ticket seller I can think of. It’s insane how much he’s crossed over and attracted people.

We’ve done the conversation about ‘hardcore’ and ‘casuals’ to death, but Joshua somehow appeals to people who wouldn’t even be considered casual fans of boxing, they are literally only interested in AJ.

However, I would suggest there are signs that the bubble might be about to burst, even if only slightly.

That's pretty logical. He is the major force of the division and this is the heavyweights, the most popular division. When did Britain have such caliber of a fighter? There was Lewis, but he represented Canada in the Olympics and often fought in the US in the pros. While Joshua is primordially British. He has even become an Olympic champion in his homeland. He's British to the core and he is inarguably best in the division, so it's fair, that he's popular among his people.

AJ is king. Whenever he fights in America he will bring an army with him.

Oh no! Not the Barmy Army!
We've had them here for the rugby, the streets were paved in vomit afterwards. You can't unleash them on the poor yanks!

NO,

maybe modern day TV, Hype and bullshit would have you think that way and reach millions... but put it in perspective.

LOOOOONG before AJ, was Wilde, Kid Lewis, Wells...

Harvey, Boon, Harvey vs McAvoy

and then came Freddie Mills, whom was THEE British Sporting personality for a couple/3 decades and that was without the luxury of modern day social media and such reach.

I love all of those boxers, but did they sell out stadiums like AJ?

I'm sure I read about a British or European title bout filling Wembley long ago. Think it might have been Turpin.

Would have been the arena that's been around for a long time. Without looking I think Turpin beat Robinson there or Earl's Court.

The stadium had fighters there but nowhere close to the Klitschko Joshua attendance.

The Parker fight did him no favours. I know a few people who went and said they wouldn’t go again. If they don’t see a knockout, they’re bored.

I see where you're coming from, I was at the Parker fight in the cheap seats and you could sense the disappointment from the crowd at the lack of action. He needs a big KO win in his next fight I think to get the show back on the road and fans excited again.

Jack Petersen, Welsh boxer & British Heavyweight Champion of the 1930's, drew crowds of up to 90,000 back in the day.

Apparently he had 53,000 against Hein Muller, 90,000 against Jack Doyle, 70,000 against Len Harvey & also Larry Gains & also 60,000+ for the rematch against Neusel.

I'm not sure what his rubber match with Harvey drew but it was at Wembley Arena.

Petersen was a proper superstar, good looking (for a Welshman) with an exciting style.

And all of this before he retired aged 25 :oo

I'd say AJ has a way to go yet.

If you go back to the days of prizefighting, pre Queensbury, crowds of 100,000 and 120,000 we're not uncommon.
