Who wins this Saturday night's bout between Prograis and Velasco?

The winner gets a spot in the World Boxing Super Series later this year.

Prograis.

By KO.

Within 6.

Velasco another one of those unbeaten challengers who hasn't fought at a high level until this bout.

Sometimes these guys can surprise (Munguia) but usually they fall woefully short when finally tested.

Figure Velasco to take a beating against the talented Prograis. Another ESPN (semi) title fight that screams mismatch.

Sounds reasonable to me, but I expect Prograis to stop him about round 8..

Argentine fighters are FAMOUS for building up flashy unbeaten records by bottom-feeding back in Argentina like paper champ Cesar Cuenca did a few years back. Cuenca was something like 48-0 and beat unbeaten, untested Korean Ik Yang for the vacant IBF world title. Cuenca lost his very first title defense to untested Eduard Troyanovsky in Russia, who had a couple easy title defenses before getting demolished by Julius Indongo.

Velasco is probably as mediocre as Cuenca and should get dominated by Prograis. He will be VERY fortunate to last the distance....

I can't see it going anywhere near the distance.

Velasco has been floored by mediocre fighters on the Argentine circuit.

Prograis hits very hard and when he decks Velasco, he's likely to keep him there.

Then bring on Prograis-Ramirez. Or right after Prograis waltzes through the tourney.

interested to hear your analysis about why prograis breezes through the tourney, like, what makes it clear that a guy like josh taylor would be easy work, is this all based on the indongo fight

i think prograis should be a fav for the tourny but not convinced yet that hed breeze it

I think Prograis wins this in the first two rounds honestly.

Velasco is not bad at all. But Prograis is too much for him. KO 1 or 2

LOL.

If Velasco was any good, would you really be predicting a possible 1st round KO?

Velasco might be the best of a weak Argentine circuit, but that doesn't make him legit world class.

If he's bad, he'll fall quick and hard.

Prograis better be packing granite because he eats a lot of shots. He needs to go to the body here to break this guy down.

Prograis finally get him out of there.

Good performance but he was really taking his time tonight

It seems like Prograis was carrying him in spots. Velasco survived for a while showing a lot of heart. His corner is horrible. They should have pulled the plug after the 5th or 6th round. Especially end it when the fighter asks you to call it!!

Great point. Velasco is so soft to the body that Prograis could have taken him out in 3 or 4 rounds if he went downstairs earlier and more often.

The fact that Prograis did NOT work the body more intensively after Velasco went down the first time has me thinking he's not as mature as he looked against Indongo, whose style and physique are tailor-made for Prograis.

Before this fight I had Prograis as the favorite in the upcoming WBSS tourney, but after this outing I dont see him beating Josh Taylor unless he shows MUCH better ring generalship than he showed tonight.

Prograis fought with limited intensity against an overmatched opponent.

Almost a gym session for him.

Took his time because he knew he could end it at any time. His body work was hellacious.

His performance tonight means little. Prograis will rise to the task in the tourney when he's actually challenged.

You might be right but I think every performance needs to be taken into account, especially when its a guy on the way up who has faced limited oppositiion. A fighter needs to give 110% every time out and I just thought Prograis did far too much posing and not enough punching (especially the inconsistent body work which proved so effective). Regis could have had him out in half the time if he threw more of those blistering body shots!!

The WBSS will be his GENUINE test and I see him as #2 behind Taylor. Fortunately for Prograis, the WBSS 140-pound lineup is heavy on Europeans like Troyanovsky and Yigit and light on Latino fighters like Antonio Orozco and Alex Saucedo, which seems to be the story for ALL the WBSS tourneys so far (its understandable at Cruiserweight since there are not many Latino/Hispanic 200-pounders).

the bantamweight one has a few latinos as well, and a japanese guy, and an african, pretty much all the serious players at 118, you really seem salty and moany about the wbss

are the top rank guys like saucedo and ramirez even allowed in it? pretty sure the bigger ramirez was asked but declined, so he could fight crap. seems a common them with the top rank guys skipping out, maybe bob likes to have all the control. imo if thats the case you cant blame the wbss people

is saucedo even clearly better then a guy like ivan baranchyk anyway?

"salty and moany"? >

That's a weak defense of the fact that that the WBSS is Eurocentric for obvious reasons. Both promoters involved are EUROPEANS: Sauerland is German and Schaefer is Swiss, so the Eurocentric bias is no surprise. I'm NOT saying that bias doesnt work BOTH ways.

DeLaHoya/Golden Boy is clearly Latino-centric but at least he is NOT trying to hide behind a supposedly "neutral/global" tournament like the WBSS is.

--------------

And while I'm not saying Saucedo is necessarily better than the undefeated Ivan Baranchyk (who has some nice wins), he IS clearly better than European laugher Troyanovsky, who should NEVER have been included after his total destruction by Julius Indongo.

its not on the wbss if guys from certain promoters arent allowed to enter or decline the opportunity , no point in even complaining about someone like saucedo or ramirez not being in when ol bob wants full control over his fighters

given that the 140 tourney really isnt bad at all, nor is 118 and neither was cruiser, it was only 168

and lol you are salty, you cant help but complain about the 'euro-centric' wbss over and over and over. you were even pre emptively moaning about paul butler and gavin mcdonnell both being in at 118 when they arent

Hopefully it was complaints from people with FAR more influence than me that has been keeping Butler and McDonnell out of the 118 WBSS (although you never know if they could be added at the last minute). Last I heard they didnt have the entire roster of 8 fighters finalized yet.

from what im seeing looks like at 118 there will be a puerto rican, a dominican, a japanese, a south african, an aussie, an american, a brit, and a russian.

the brit ryan burnett is an undefeated champ whose top 3 in the world. hes obvioisly a good inclusion. butler and mcdonnell dont seem to be participating, that was just some totally contrived pre-emptive injustice crying,. if they are included among the 8 starting participants i will agree its weak but i dont see indications that they will be

at 140 saucedo and jc ramirez are with a promoter whose guys dont seem to be allowed by there promoter to compete in the wbss. and we all know how much bob loves in house stuff. he likes the control and hed have much less of that plus his guys would be in very risky fights. the euro guys arent with top rank. its also a promoter thing and not just a nationality thing imo. i agree 168 was weak but cruiser was good, bantams looking good, and given who can realistically compete i think 140 isnt so bad.

btw, yigit-baranchyk is a mandatory fight for the ibf title. both guys are young and unbeaten and a world title is on the line and added to the tournament. of course thats a relevant fight. and troyanovski is the mandatory for the wba title held by relikh. so those are world title fights where people outside the wbss have ordered a euro challenger.

a fight like yigit-baranchyks not a bad fight at all or screaming of bias to have yigit (dont you love former amateur standouts lol) in the tourney. you complaining about that is just strange. thats what i mean by salty/moaning. its a perfectly legit and natural fight to have in the tourney and your complaining about the euro bias of a guy yigit (former amateur star!!! lol) being there while protected top rank guys arent is just moaning

sure enough, the two belts which seemingly wont be in the tournament are the wbc and wbo, one held by a top rank fighter and the other lined up to be contentsted by a top rank fighter. blame ol bob not the wbss people.

I was the poster that voted Prograis by decision. For a moment there I thought Velasco might be able to weather the storm. However, by round 7 he was unable to recover from the damage of Regis' wicked body shots.
