One of the greatest Zimbabwean fighters of all time, Langton “Schoolboy” Tinago, died earlier today at the age of 68.
The rangy, punch-picking Tinago toppled several British fighters in a career that spanned 20 years and over 100 fights, including Ken Buchanan, Chris Sanigar and Ian McLeod, before West Ham's Mo Hussein essentially ended his career on a late knockout in Basildon in 1987. Tinago, who was 37, went home and had one more fight, which he won, then called it a day with an outstanding record of 86-20-3 (16).
Tinago made a real name for himself here prior to the Hussein setback, outboxing McLeod in Glasgow, stopping Leeds man Michael Marsden in Doncaster and pulling out a brutal right to flatten Aussie Graham Brooke in Manchester in 1986 on the undercard to Najib Daho's world title attempt against Barry Michael. Brooke, who had previously outscored him, walked on to the shot and went down and out 'live' on ITV on a saturday afternoon. Victory brought Tinago the Commonwealth lightweight title but that man Hussein took the title from him in 11 rounds on the night Terry Marsh deposed American Joe Manley in a circus tent, and Langton's remarkable career was all but over.
