Irish boxer, TJ Doheny has just went to Japan and beaten Ryosuke Iwasa on points to win the IBF Super Bantam Title.
Very close fight which could have gone either . The official cards were 115-113, 116-112, 117-112 which were probably too wide.
An amazing achievement. Only the 2nd Irish or UK boxer to win a World Title in Japan. The other was Wayne McCullough.

also defo reaffirms japan being the fairest to visiters, actually funny because a lot of people saying that ya doheny deserved it but that two of the scores were actually too wide! no home geneoristy for the japanese guy
doheny i think has gotten almost no talk on here since ive been here, i think prob because he was in aus. i wonder if hell come back now thats hes got a title

Superb, I loved that they read the whole decision in their native tongue and his face when he realises he has won, having clearly assumed the home fighter would have got the nod.

Watched bits of this yesterday,
He looks decent, it's a good win beating a belt holder in their home country regardless of Iwasa being considered a weak champion.
This weight class badly needs unifications. No one has tight deals to any promoters or networks so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Great upset win.
The decision was deserved.
Going to be honest I didn’t give him much of a chance here.
Hope the lad gets a chance in either Australia or Ireland to defend his title.
Could be a lot of money to see him head back to Japan though.

With the likes of Wake, Kameda, Matsumoto, even Kuga and Maruta and Otake... A lot of fights in Japan that could be made and a reputation as a Japanese Killer tends to help build up the purses to return as well

I'm also into Japanese boxing. I love the fitness, the fast pace, the surprise world title victories when given no chance, the large number of brutal fights that go mostly unrecognised, and the many exciting, positive world title challenges. Also, there is considerable depth on the Japanese scene. I like to check the old, learning fights of current champs and often I discover they beat future world champs in memorable contests, or they featured in savage contests for domestic crowns.
Is it weird to like the Japanese scene? Or, are others dismissive or prejudiced against it?
By the way, how was this fight, Doheny v Iwasa?
Japan have yet to produce a superb super bantamweight on the world scene in the past six years or so. However, their domestic scene is very competitive. A lot of excellent grassroots level fights. And their fighters are capable of the odd surprise performance here and there for genuine titles.

Japanese boxing is thriving, ive been following it a lot more than i used to, going to Tokyo this year so gonna try and visit the Teiken boxing gym while im there.
