Mayorga retires!

From fightnews...
"The always unpredictable Ricardo Mayorga has taken a page out of Tito Trinidad's book by retiring according a press report from Nicaragua. "I am not going to continue fighting," Mayorga told La Prensa. "I'm retired....I'm simply not continuing and have no need to continue. I have sufficient resources....The sacrifice is a lot and I have been fighting since I was 11 years old. So at 31 years of age, I seek peace." The pick here is that Mayorga's retirement is shorter in duration that Tito's."
I'm not even surprised. He got his payday against Trinidad and now he's finished. He's moved up in weight to do it, he can't properly go back down now. He's done.

I've heard he got 5 million dollers then I heard he got 2.5 million? Don't forget to subtract the 100,000 he lost on the bet to Tito.

Glad to see the back of him he is useless anyway...one of the biggest hype jobs I have ever seen without fail.

May have been a hype job, but if he didn't show off and come out with all the mouth would he have earned the couple of million he has.
Hype gets you paid.

He will be back no doubt, I can see him ending up broke before long.
HH - I think the term useless is a bit strong, if a former partially unified world champion is useless then what does that make the British Welter and Light Middleweight fighters?
Not having a go, I know what you mean. He was a hype job and I bought into it somewhat.
I just find some comments like this very interesting, on another forum I was debating (prior to the Jones match) that IBF CHAMPION Glengoffe Johnson did not deserve to be labelled "Bum of the Month" as one person did.

I would imagine a match with Fernando Vargas at Junior-Middle being very sellable?

Vargas wants to stay well away from that....win or lose it's a career threatening fight...he's had a lot of tough ones. I think Mayorga would beat him.

I love my sexy vargas, but will have to agree with ^. Mayorga would be sure to whoop his ass.

I know mate just cant stand him and couldnt believe how many people jumped on the badnwagon..I feel the same about Pacquaio as well although he is better than Mayorga.
I was just having a moan...

But what was Mayorga being hyped as? An outstanding champion set to reign for years to come? Hardly. I still don't see your point at all HH. As it is the guy knocked out two world champions and would have drawn with another had he not been penalised twice. I can't think of too many welterweights out there currently who'd have got the better of him.
Nobody was calling him the new Ray Robinson though.

Think you're under-selling Vargas a bit myself. I'd pick him to beat Mayorga.
Anyway, my point was it would be a very sellable fight!

Vargas is a good boxer but i am concerned about his punch resistance, i really think Mayorga's intensity might be too much. I don't mind Mayorga at all, he isn't all that bad, he knocked all of Andrew Lewis's six heads off and then beat Forrest twice and lets not forget he was deducted points against Cory Spinks and the fight was still very close. He still has a future in the game i think.

However, he was in most peoples P4P (and I am included). As Steve Bunce once said, guys who make that list should be nearly all be remembered many years after their career and comparison can be made across the stages of time.
When Mayorga was pushed into the top ten, there were certain high skilled fighters (like Winky Wright, Resondo Alvarez, Johnny Tapia) not that close to the top ten. I think for him to be considered as highly as he was in the P4P top ten based on one good win (cause Forrest beat him in the rematch in many peoples view) was a bit premature.

Hate to play devil's advocate Stu because you made a good point, but if a less talented guy starts knocking out all around him is it not impossible to recognise his achievements by putting him in the P4P list?

Is two guys all?
Ottke unified, Calzaghe has beaten some past champions neither have been close to my top ten (Calzaghe hasn't made the top twenty thus far).
The problem with Mayorga was that he beat Forrest who was in the top ten? There should have been some way of drawing the line (because looking back Forrest beat a shell of Moseley). That is one problem with P4P rankings.
Same with Pacquiao, he's moved to probably outside to top 20 to probably inside the top 5 based on one win. Cory Spinks is another (although he's backed it up since and Pacquiao has scored a draw with a quality opperator).
Its a tough one, I can't argue with those who had Mayorga in the top ten, because I did myself (as I said on here a big punch, good workrate and a cast iron chin makes you hard to beat). However, I think it with the likes of Mayorga, Pacquiao (for now) and Spinks (for now) that Buncey assessment on the P4P (which I do like) goes a little bit messy.

Well for starters mate you only have to have been reading the forums to see that everyone was going Mayorga mad..."he can do this and do that"...
He beat Forrest...so what who is forrest?? another over-rated fighter all on the back of wins against Mosley but very little else...
I read thread after thread sayng that Mayorga can beat almost everyone christ im sure I read somewhere he would beat Klitchsko..
The fact is he beat Forrest and thats it yet everyone was going crazy for what in reality was and is a limited and one dimensional banger...
I have never been happier at a fighters downfall than I am at Mayorgas it irked me that he had got where he had with such an obvious lack of talent...
Pacquaio will fall in much the same way I guarantee it.

Sorry i didnt make myself clear i was speaking hypothetically and not using any fighter (Mayorga) in particular as an example....sorry my fault

Fair enough, but if any fighter (i.e. Mayorga) had beaten ALL of the his main rivals, despite being apparently limited, then he's not really that bad.
If Mayorga would have beaten Spinks then I think his crude but effective style would have to recognised.
Can you think of a technically bad fighter who has beaten all of his rivals? Mayorga is the closest I think we have come.

Well if that was the case I probably missed it, as I don't pay any attention to those tedious, pointless P4P lists.

Well maybe we were reading different websites mate because I certainly don't remember thread after thread of Mayorga lovers predicting all kinds of big scalps for him. I think you're making a big thing out of what a small minority of clueless people said in a blur of excitement.
And in any case why do you make this comparison with Pacquiao? Is he being hyped as the next undisputed super-featherweight champion? Not that I've noticed. So considering that no other featherweight out there other than Marquez has a realistic chance of beating him where is this huge downfall going to come from?
