I was watching some fights from his prime and he really was a good little fighter. Tidy, compact, knew when to defend, when to attack. Paced himself well but could really get stuck in. And super fit.

An unlikely hero but you have to be glad for him, coming in late notice to beat the rock hard Davison & going on such a good run of momentum. Considering so many good fighters don’t get there, or those that do, having to come back, because they didn’t earn enough money. Stevo is a good success story, IMO.

Some really good fights: the war with Davison to win the WBO title is a minor classic. And the defenses bs Sean Murphy, Paul Hodkinson, Duke McKenzie & Colin McMillan were all good battles (in particular the one with Murphy).

Obviously Naz was all wrong for him, too mobile and fast. And for Robinson to have this fight with less than optimal preparation was hard luck.

Anyway, I’m not familiar with Robinson’s early or late career. Which fights were robbery defeats, prior to winning the WBO belt at 126? What were the robberies later on?

What great little scraps was he in prior to Davison, and was terrific battles was he in post Naz?

I can;t remember the details his fights post Hamed, but i know he was frozen out because FW wanted Hamed to clean up the belts against a load of ageing, garbage champions. Teletext went as far as announcing Robbo v Johnson, but that went away.

For a long reigning world champ to never get another title shot was very unfair.

Remember Scott Harrison fighting him and other Naz victim Tom Johnson early in his career. Tracy Harris Patterson as well. Some decent names on the way up.

Pretty sure he took the Davison fight about 4 days or so before the fight as the champion failed a blood test (I think) it really was an incredible story and he become a really good champ. Naz fight was a step to far in the end but Robinson had an unbelievable career and can be hugely proud of himself. I always enjoyed watching him, he was very tough and a better boxer than many had thought.

Keep yourself fit and you never know what might come along, Steve's story is really one of those situations.

I remember he fought Kovacs for the European title (I think). That was the end of him at top level. I was really impressed by his performance against Hoko, he took him apart and closed the show in the 12th.

Yeah, his run was really underrated. He ended up beating Hoko and McMillan who everyone expected to beat him.

Saw him at a show not long ago.

Training fighters now. Looks in tremendous shape.

He’s held in very high regard by us in South Wales. We love boxing and we love a good underdog story. He ticked both boxes and won’t need to buy a pint in many bars down here ever again (pretty sure he’d want a protein shake anyway)

Always love the story how he nearly lost the title shot as he was so poor he didn’t have a phone and his trainer was ringing around trying to find him.

Cracking fighter and a great feel good story. Hope he’s doing well.

People often rate Hameds defeat of Robinson as his peak ... but Robinson was in obvious decline before the Naz loss.

He was/is a super fit guy; and a solid operator. He took his chances and it paid off.
You really had to feel sorry for John Davison though ... he was s solid fighter who fought had to fight for the title at weight up from his best, and a fight too many ... he got old in that fight.

Hoko and McMillan were damaged goods when he fought them. But a lesser fighter would have allowed their reputations to have psyched them out ... both were heavy favourites.

Davison was a hard bastard. Almost every contest had the feeling of “fight” as opposed to “development fight.” So many fights he was in were proper battles. Just fell short at European and world level but a fine career & faced several international foes.

John Davidson often comes into my place of work. He is still a good lad. Suffering from health problems but still knows whats what.
