Floyd Mayweather made the announcement via social media, but there is no date or venue for the fight.
How do you feel about a Davis-Mares match-up?

A Mares farewell to boxing bout?
Davis would appear to be too big, too fast for the somewhat worn Mares.
We saw how easily Davis handles Cuellar, who gave Mares a rugged battle.
It's difficult to imagine Mares faring too much better.

Yeh. Mares is a slugger type. Davis would be able to handle him easy. Mares isn't exactly old, but he's been involved in tiring fights.

That, and he's just a little bit outgunned by Davis you'd think who has always fought at 130 while Mares started as a Bantamweight.

Abysmal fight. Thought if he doesn't fight Farmer next he would move up.
It's said it many times Davis is over rated and protected.

Farmer may ask for a lot of money, he has a belt now.. Stil think it should be made. Davis should be able to unify..

Don't think Farmer is bothered, plus he has only just won a belt so doubt there have been any serious talks.
This really is a crap fight though.

Horrific fight. Mares is a tiny fighter. He doesn't even belong at FW, neither do a lot of his class that move up from SBW. Frampton is another fighter that is tiny for the division. He was having a rough time against two huge Mexicans that weren't near elite.
Mares has always wanted to move up, though. I remember after he beat PDL he was talking about fighting Miura and moving up.
I think Mares is at the point where he can't really beat the top FW's but he doesn't want to move down. Only thing is to hope to move up and beat a top SFW.

why? mares is a little guy (former bantamweight) coming off a loss a division below, hell get mauled
tank i hold in very high regard and i think he has very rare talent , i want to see him vs top comp, i feel he can get the job done and have a great career if matched right....this type of talent should be pushed
seen some other ppl excuse the fight saying tanks still young and all that, which just shows a pussy pampering attitude around a lot today, a lot of great fighters where already facing and overcoming challenges as youngsters , i feel tank can do the same

I thought Mares looked ok against LSC and has enough respect as a boxer to challenge Davis at the higher weight at this point in his career.
Gervonta Davis ... A lot of Mayweather fighters have the same stamp of boxing style and will do certain things the same way,

It seems cynical to say Mares is past prime given his age. But boy has he taken some beatings.
Davis is better than this.
Whilst not quite a mismatch, it will probably be a one sided beatdown ending in a stoppage.
Are we overrating Davis?
Do his handlers not think he is a level above Mares?

Imo, Tank has a little bit of the Judah/Broner syndrome. Sometimes he lacks focus. It's going to get him in trouble against some of the top fighters.
TBH, I haven't watched Mares in a while. He reminded me somewhat of Ward the way he fought. An intelligent brawler. I know he's the smaller man. And like I stated, I am unaware of his current form. But if he's anything like he was 4 or 5 years ago, I can see him giving Tank some trouble if Tank is not on his A game.

I was a fan of Mares. I think 5 or 6 years ago he was legit p4p top 10. At this point though i favour Davis to stop him.

Best that could happen to tank would be to fall out of mayweather's favor completely and having to make it on his"own". Otherwise floyd will try to keep him in his pocket his whole career. He would have to fight "real" fights (not pre-arranged ones, protected fights), build his own legacy. He should fight the best, cause he's one of the best and will be on top for a long time.

Davis will win this one. Probably a TKO, but possibly a UD. I'd be pretty stunned if Mares wins. Mares is a good fighter, but he's just not big enough or physically strong enough to be able to beat the Top guys at Featherweight on up. This is even bigger than Featherweight so he probably gets stopped here.
He'll give a good account of himself though outgunned or not. He always does.
