Any other fans of Japanese film?

If you are and haven't seen this, see it soon. It's a classic. What could be better than fourty-odd schoolkids marooned on a deserted island, each given a weapon, and told to kill each other until only one remains. Can't wait for the sequel.

sequel is out mate, I have them both on dvd, once you get past the initial pain in the arse of having to read the subtitles (after 5-10mins you dont even notice) its a quality film. Second is not as good as the first though.

Whoever thought of the film must be twisted!!

There is alot of great japanese movie. If you like Battle royale try Ichi the Killer, Dead or Alive 1 (Most fucked up ending EVER) or Brother (really cheap on http://www.cd-wow.com). The koreans have also made some good movies like Friend and Joint Security Area.

Battle Royale is a great film, the Japanese certainly know how to make a good film....Spooky horrors like Audition, The Eye, Dark Water and the excellent original "Ring" (not the distorted but enjoyable Yank interpretation)....also violent gangster movie Brother is a delight, look out for movies by Hideo Nakata, he is a stellar director.

Takeshi Kitano is class! Hana-Bi, Sonatine, Brother, Boiling Point, Violent Cop.......... Can't get enuf. Early Japanese film influenced the Western film genre with the kind of solitary characters Clint Eastwood portrayed and later japanese films such as, Takeshi's were a major influence for Tarantino's filmatic style. Oh yeh, I'm a big fan.

yeah...heard plenty about this film. I borrowed it for 2 weeks off my mate...but didn't get round to watching it...and he wanted it back

Subtitled films do put me off a little...sounds like a non-sophisticated thing to say...

i will get round to watching some foreign films though, Crouching Tiger, Hero, City of God and Das Experiment are all films at the top of my 'must see' list.

City Of God is a must-see, it is a superb film...i love subtitled films Bit sad i know but if you like them try....Das Experiment a German film....Funny Games a psychotic Austrian film, not for the squeamish.....Piano Teacher a bit of a sick French film...and of course Amores Perros a Mexican offering from the director of the excellent "21 Grams"

City of God is on every night this week. I'll probably try to watch it at least twice.

Has anyone seen La Haine, that's one of my favourite European films. And i like subtitled films too, but i prefer the word cultured rather than sad, Steve.

You are missing out. It's superb, and both a little worrying and disturbing.

I've got another one, the original El Mariache. Made back when Rodriguez wasn't making crap kids films.

I've never watched Amelie, but i think your dark secret is out now. I can see it now, little kids taunting you everywhere you go, old ladies whispering as you walk past, and even the "Chav" underclass treating you like a man with a contagious disease.

yeah saw the adds this week...reminded me that i need to see it...but haven't got film four. to be fair i could probably download it off the net.....may do so now....

Yeh, u are missing out defo, it's excellent. However, the director then did a film called The Crimson Rivers, again with Vincent Cassel and included Jean Reno but it flopped IMO.

I'm now into the Kill Bill trilogy tho......hooked. Not usually a hollywood movie fanatic but I'm taking comfort in knowing the influences of Tarantino as mentioned above.

Actually i didn't think Crimson Rivers was too bad, apart from the end it was a bit of a cop out i think.

How could you have wasted your time with The Crimson Rivers but not watched the creme de la creme yet..... La Haine??? Sort it out m8

Not seen it. My mate heartily recommends it though.

I saw a French Canadian film called Jesus of Montreal as part of one of my degree courses though.

I'm not really a film buff, but I saw the most weird film ever recently. Some Korean (?) film called 'Gozu'.

Its a japanese movie. I havent seen it yet but I would like to since I really like Takashi Miikes work.

La Haine is an excellent film There is another Brazilian film about the day in the life of two teenagers that is very good as well. Unfortunately cant remember the name.

Never watched many foreign films.

me neither but I watched city of God last night, the fim about brazilian street gangs, truly harrowing and disturbing.

If you don't mind subtitlles, one of the best films I've ever seen, and one of the scariest too, is a Dutch movie called "The Vanishing".

It's about a couple traveling across France. They stop at a service station for a break, and the wife vanishes without trace.
He sets out to find out what happened to her....and years later, he does.

The last scene of the film is a shocker, you'll never forget it.
