The punch stats for Tyson Fury’s bout against Francesco Pianeta makes for interesting reading.

Pianeta could only manage to land a total 36 punches throughout the entire duration of the bout, with the German landing four shots or less for seven rounds.

Francesco landed only one punch during the final round.



Thoughts?

I don't put much weight on them. They are presented like objective fact, when it's just people pushing buttons. To accurately give punch stats for a boxing match you'd need to go through it in slowmo, watching the same bits from different angles. And slowly work out what did and didn't land.

Only at the lighter weights. The way the heavyweights fight, it's easy to count their punches. It's not like any of them are of Ali or Tyson's speed. In general, they're fairly slower and less active.

Often fighters have trouble jabbing against a southpaw. That may partially account for Fury's abysmal jab connect percentage.

Pianeta didn't land much but did he make a real effort? Or was he just collecting a paycheck without getting hurt the way Kevin effin' Johnson hurt him last year?

And Fury was hardly a ball of fire landing about 10 light punches per round and connecting on just 17% of his shots.

Unless Pianeta has Mayweather-like defensive skills, that low connect percentage has to be disturbing to the Fury camp.

If it suggests major rust, Fury has no business jumping in with Wilder at this time.

You’ve raised some good points, but I do feel that Tyson Fury is a work-in-progress and will inevitably address a few stylistic flaws, things that were ineffective against Pianeta, prior to facing Wilder.

I don’t feel that Fury’s camp should be overly-concerned about the effectiveness of Tyson’s jab at this point in time.

For sure, he needs to use the jab more effectively, but I don’t think it’ll take a huge effort for Tyson to address this issue. His jab was pretty damn good for the Chisora rematch, so it's not a completely new skill that he has to learn from scratch.

He’s almost certainly going to have to constantly pump the jab in Wilder’s face in order to keep the American off-balance, preventing him from gaining leverage when he tries to unleash his famed right hand.

That being said, I would have preferred to see Fury engage in a couple more bouts prior to challenging for Wilder’s title.

They collectively landed 8 jabs out of 440? Horse sh*t.

Yea that jab stat is way off. Unless it was talking specifically jab to the body. Hard to tell. Also are they counting punches landed on the blocker or ones that pierce it?

Just opinion.

Fury's not an explosive puncher. Without a real fighter in nearly 3 years, what you saw Saturday may very well be all Fury is capable of right now.

Planeta shouldn’t be landing anymore than 4 shots a round on a world class heavyweight anyway.

I would genuinely be amazed if Pianeta landed anymore than 4 punches in total if he fought Joshua.

He might outlast Wilder, but he isn’t hurting either of them. He will be awkward but no world class heavyweight is getting out of the ring after fighting Fury, busted up and hurt.

Come on, scare Wilder away?! We're not talking about a monster here, we're talking about a dancer. I'm not sure what you could be possibly referring to.
