Bloody hell, this ‘90s British featherweight was in some exciting battles.

He won the British title a couple of times, was ferocious and really got stuck in, and failed to win the WBO featherweight crown from a prime Steve Robinson, during which he was stopped in a punch fest.

Any memories of him?

Also, is he the same Sean Murphy who used to train Anthony Joshua?

Yeah same guy, proper fighter

During the broadcast Reg Gutteridge mentioned that the fights with McKay and B Good were FOTY candidates. Anyone seen these?

Caught Murphy’s title losing effort with Gary DeRoux and this was a truly fierce encounter.

I saw him get stopped by Pat Clinton in the ABAs back in 1983 and a year later he lost to another Scot, Dave Anderson, in the ABAs but then he put it together and won two ABA titles and gold at the Commonwealth Games in 1986, stopping Roy Nash in the final. As a pro he was thrown in too soon against the world class Ray Minus in a shot at the Commonwealth bantamweight title and was outclassed, after which he moved up to featherweight and worked his way to a shot at the British title. He destroyed the slippery John Doherty on home turf to win the title and looked good in a couple of defences before dropping the belt to Gary De Roux. He won the title back with a stoppage of Alan McKay and later challenged Steve Robinson for the WBO title and Billy Schwer up at lightweight. Good, dangerous fighter with long arms.

His battle with Mike Whalley was a belter. ITV showed that on the excellent Seconds Out programme.

I’ve been watching his fights and he was a rip roaring featherweight. Shame people only know him as the guy Joshua gave a car to, seen on videos shared on social media.

people know him as the coach at finchley, his son and daughter also boxed, a really nice guy,
