Jorge "El Nino De Oro" Linares (44-4, 27 KOs), the former king of the 135-pound division and one of boxing's top fighters, will return to the ring in a new division as he faces Abner "Pin" Cotto (23-3, 12KOs) in a 12-round, 140-pound battle that promises fireworks. The clash will be the main event of the Sept. 29 edition of Golden Boy Fight Night at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. The action will be streamed live on Facebook Watch in the U.S. and globally on the Golden Boy Fight Night Page.

Linares, a 32-year-old Venezuelan considered one of the top fighters in the world, will make his highly anticipated return after his spectacular battle against Vasyl "Hi-Tech" Lomachenkoin May. Though losing his WBA and Ring Magazine Lightweight Titles in the process, Linares delivered a great performance and dropped his challenger for the first time in his career. Linares will look to place himself in a position to once again become a world champion, but this time as a super lightweight against Abner Cotto.

"I am coming back hungrier than ever to demonstrate to the world that I am still one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world," said Jorge Linares. "I want those big fights and the world has not seen the best of me. With my new trainer and my team, we will demonstrate that I am more than capable in taking over this new super lightweight division against a notable opponent in Abner Cotto. This September 29, fans will see a determined Jorge Linares."

Not sure if Linares is planning on staying at light welterweight. It’s an open division. Still some decent fights at lightweight too.

Most of the good 140 fighters are currently in the WBSS..

I would still like to see a Garcia vs. Linares fight too.

After such a long and illustrious career at LW, he decides now is the time to move up :maybe:
All the top guys and most of the belts are wrapped up in the WBSS for the next 12 months or so. Linares isn't a young guy who can wait around.
And here's me hoping for a Campbell rematch

He might not stay at 140 though.

Worthless fight. 5 extra pounds isn't gonna give a C-lister a shot against a world-class fighter.

Ramirez (WBA Champion) and Hooker (WBO Champion) are both not involved in the superseries. Could go after those two.

I think he might be. He was talking of moving up after the loss to Loma. And this recent quote;
"I want those big fights and the world has not seen the best of me. With my new team, we will demonstrate that I am more than capable in taking over this new junior welterweight division against a notable opponent in Abner Cotto. This Sept. 29, fans will see a determined Jorge Linares."

Yeh. I read that actually. If he can still make 135 then he should. But then tbh he can become a 4-weight world champion now

JORGE LINARES, Former Three-Division World Champion:

“I’ve prepared very well for this fight. I’m training with Jorge Zerpa for this fight. He isn’t a new trainer. In fact, we were together 11 years ago when I fought for my first world title against Oscar “El Chololo” Larios in Las Vegas. We’re working on a lot of things, but mostly we’ve been reviewing and going back to an old school style of training. I’m not changing my style, just adding some things. I had been thinking about moving to 140 pound for some time. When the opportunity to fight Lomachenko came, I took the fight at 135 pounds even though it was already difficult to do so. If I were to get the opportunity to fight him again, I would drop to 135 pounds, but for now I’ll look for more opportunities at 140 pounds. A fight with Mikey Garcia or Jose Ramirez would be excellent, but I need to get stay focused on the opponent in front of me. I know Abner Cotto is tough. He knows how to fight on the inside and the outside. I know he will work hard to give a great fight this Saturday.”

Tends to happen when a big name guy is coming off of an ass kicking though. Like Linares is.

The card is underway on Facebook/Golden Boy.

The Linares fight should start in about 30 minutes or so.

Such Bullshit!! Linares held cotto while he hit him with 3 rabbit punches Then they both fell and the ref called it a slip and then started counting him out. Should’ve been a no contest.

I’m a huge Linares fan but this just sucks though...

Linares provided a great combination in the 2nd. He closed the distance with a stiff jab, which distracted Cotto, then Linares scored a hard one-two, down went Cotto. Abner never recovered from that hard right hand, the stoppage in the 3rd was a matter of time.

The 3rd round was a mess. Good knockdown.

Cotto made a mistake when he tried to tag the ref claiming to be hit low. Unless the ref stops it, don’t take your eye off your opponent.

The last knockdown was a mess though.

Yeah, but it seemed, Cotto just wanted this fight to stop somehow.

HONESTLY you don’t think the 3 rabbit punches contributed heavily to cotton going down and getting dazed? I agree Linares is way more of a skilled fighter but the rabbits weren’t even acknowledged by the ref.
