Well if GGG shows his age in rematch and he gets beat, would people criticize/detract him ?

What people forget is that Canelo is in his peak of his prime at 28 and Golovkin is past of his prime at 36. :TU:

I wouldn’t.. because he beat Canelo the first time and that was a year ago.

No people would criticize and detract on Canelo.

Because that's what people enjoy doing.

And these same people will undoubtedly have a million excuses lined up for Golovkin.

Yes, but apart from the age advantage, alleged drug use, alleged corrupt judging, and disputed handwraps, there's nothing to suggest that a Canelo victory won't be a great achievement. Nothing at all.

Of course there will always be some naysayers who will argue that if this age gap was reversed then this would not be a meaningful contest. Or even if they were both 28.

Sheesh! The lengths some people will go to deny Canelo his credit.

Seriously, if we put this into perspective and weigh up all the advantages and disadvantages on each side a victory will be a great achievement for either side. If Canelo wins he will have defeated a previously unbeaten champion whom none have been willing to stand with toe to toe. If Golovkin wins then he's still the 'baddest' middleweight on the planet at 36.

But let's not start getting carried away and start pretending for even a second that this was ever an equal footed contest.

Canelo once more goes in with as many advantages as he 'legally' can.

No excuses but let's face it, GGG is not a spring chicken anymore.

IMO GGG did not show any signs of getting out of prime yet. We will see 15.9. :box: :box: :box:

theres always criticism. bit if ggg gets beat up, one could say, he feasted on average opposition for many years, and once stepping up, looked ordinary. in other words a stand out win will be a big boost for his legacy.

take the other big fight fans wanted for 2 yrs or so. kovalev ward. although kovalev arguably won the first match, at the end of the 2 bouts, 1 guy is a legend, and 1 has a damaged reputation, that has only fallen further since.

so, its still a big legacy fight for both guys. ... of course it will probably be close again and they have a trilogy!

I don't know if I'd call Andre Ward a "Legend" necessarily, but he'd have to rank as one of the very best in Super Middleweight history I reckon. Granted it's a pretty young division, and that would've been the case even before the Kovalev fights.

The Kovalev wins didn't do a lot for him in my view because neither was legitimate.

And everyone and their parents know GGG has already beaten Canelo. It’s just recorded as a DRAW in the record Books.

People will say that but it wasn't GGG's fault that Sturm, Quillin, Martinez, JCjr and Cotto ducked him and acted like he didn't exist at that particularly time. Let's not forget that GGG put a lot of effort to get three major titles and force the big names to fight him. And guess what, neither Jacobs nor Canelo couldn't defeat the old lion! :OhYes:

Many will. I won't. As far as I'm concerned GGG already beat him conclusively whatever the judges scorecards and with everything stacked against him. At his age things can unravel overnight but I sincerely hope that's a few fights down the road and not this one.

Canelo can wait. His time will come. Too many people are determined that it will.

If he comes out and suddenly looks over the hill, I think that will mostly be regarded as terrible timing. If he looks pretty good but is beaten on points, I think everyone knows how controversial that'll be.

Hopkins was 36 and widely considered to be slowing down when he faced 28-year-old first ballot hall of famer Felix Trinidad.
Trinidad was also a huge favorite coming into the fight.

A fighter being past their best does not and never has meant they can't beat a fighter who is at their peak.

GGG may be a bit past his best but he is still on top.
36-year-old fighters beating 28-year-old hall of famers has been done before.

People are looking for a very weak excuse and the fight hasn't even happened.

..I don't think anyone has been looking for an excuse...you can't beat "father time"..some legends retired before 36, some continued to box but were hopelessly losing, few continued to be successful having lowered the level of opposition..

They are absolutely looking for an excuse.

This isn't the 1970's.
Athletes across the sporting spectrum are lasting longer these days.
Top fighters recording one of their personal best wins or even the very best win of their career in their mid to late 30's is not that unusual.

Shane Mosley, Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara, James Kirkland, Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan, Liam Smith. How many good fighters does Alvarez need to beat? His resume outshines GGG by far IMO. So GGG is 36 years old, so what? It's not like he'a a dinosaur or something! Pacman just grabbed a belt and he is about 40, and, I bet he holds it for a bit. C'mon people we have a good fight in here, why spoil it with "what if this or that?" Rarely, if ever, is a fight perfectly balanced in terms of advantages/disadvatages between two fighters. It's not a team sport. You don't get to play this guy to make up for the weaknesses of that guy. That's what I like about it.
