Have you ever really thought about this age old tradition and how silly it is? In preparation for a hand to hand battle with their lives on the line, they first need to get their faces as close as possible without blinking to show how tough they are. While almost naked, you are supposed to get close enough to make out with the other guy. Who came up with this? How is this a sign of toughness?
Personally, i find them uncomfortable as hell. The only entertaining ones end with fists being thrown and most of them have been proven to be an act and showmanship. Let the boxers put their clothes on and say a few words into the microphone to each other. I'm good with seeing them touch noses...to me that's not tough.

Agreed, I don’t like it at all. It’s just for the photos.

It is strictly for the photo's for the press, so they can use them..
There are some that are funny.

Yeah, I was going to say that I've seen Pacquiao in several of these intense, threatening weigh-in staredowns.
After the photos are taken, Manny always turns away grinning and laughing.
Never swallow what boxing feeds you.

You can't hate Pacman.. I think it was Clottey's face.
I think in some cases, they can be intense.. Or sometimes over the top..
Bring in Haye vs. Chisora.. Having that steel sheet between them..

It's just some hype and photo op. Sometimes it can give fighters the chance to needle a little too. If i was GGG i would be asking canelo if he will be running away again or if he has the balls to stand and trade.

but what would a fight be without fight fans blabbing the day before about someone looking drained, pale, 'just a bit off' , etc

I like it. Always good for press and sometimes you get intense atmospheres. I can't wait to see Canelo/GGG staredown. That one will be good too.

I think Canelo has heard those lines a million times during the promotion.
I doubt he pays much attention to criticism or the incessant goading from Sanchez.
Canelo recently said that Golovkin has no huevos.
Golovkin, who for some reason fancies himself a Mexican, ran to his refrigerator to prove Canelo wrong.

Canelp might not react to the goading about him running away, but getting ousted as a cheat might needle him into coming forward more.

I agree with you. I dislike all this showbiz baloney, including these idiotic drawn out circus. The tradition isn't "age old" either. When did they come up with the presser & stare down baloney, maybe 10 years ago? It reminds me of a game we played when we were little kids: stare at each other and the first one to blink or laugh loses ha ha!

Staredowns and face offs are great. Especially if they're like this one.
Lemieux v O' Sullivan looks like a cracker. If Spike is acting, he deserves an Oscar (small metal one).
His speech silences the crowd. "Greasy piece of sh#t". WTF?

It's boring without them, though. Oftentimes, the animosity drags into the ring like Chisora/Whyte. Great part of the sport.

Like it or not, it's as much a part of the sport as trash-talk, so dont expect it to end.

Some people want boxing to be like wrestling with exciting "story lines" and some people want it to be like a real sport.

I hear it said a lot that boxing is a sport you dont "play". You play football, basketball, tennis, etc. but you dont PLAY boxing. You fight or you box...
The same can be said of MMA/UFC which is a lot more like WWE than boxing is. One thing that always cracks me up is in UFC fights when the ringside commentators start screaming and yelling to try to "pump up" the TV audience.
