"Oscar De La Hoya hits out at keyboard warriors in open letter"
Dear Fight Fans,
On the night of Saturday, September 15, fans were set to be treated to what sports should be all about: the two best athletes in a sport squaring off against each other with the winner earning the title of the best in the business. This kind of an event – where an individual can be called the best in any sport — is truly rare.
Not only did the fight itself deliver all that was promised, against all kinds of pressure, Canelo Alvarez gave the performance of his lifetime to secure the unified middleweight championship of the world.
Unfairly criticized for not fighting “Mexican” enough in the first fight, he kept Gennady Golovkin on his heals all night, taking the action to the “boogeyman of boxing,” walking him down and controlling the pace.
Repeatedly ravaged for two positive drug tests that showed minor traces of clenbuterol – a common occurrence in Mexico due to the contamination of beef across the country, Canelo submitted to more than 20 drug tests in the lead up to the fight and passed them all with flying colors.
Saddled with a judge’s card of a year ago that he had nothing to do with; the pressure of millions of fans watching; and what many were describing as a must-win to stay relevant, Canelo delivered a near-flawless fight.
And yet…
It wouldn’t be boxing if thousands of keyboard warriors weren’t talking (or tweeting) complete nonsense in the hours and days after Canelo began to cement his legacy as an all-time great fighter.
Many have told me to ignore the haters; that I’ll never win. But while I know I won’t convince many of them, allowing them to even partly soil what was a certain fight of the year; a megaevent seen by millions of people; and a virtuoso performance by boxing’s marquis fighter would do a disservice to the sport I love.
So allow me to respond to a few of the more absurd comments.
Golden Boy paid the judges to fix the fight.
Though I don’t think this deserves response, here are the facts: The three judges were chosen by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Given the result of the first fight, NSAC was under a lot of scrutiny to come up with the fairest group of judges possible. For the first time I know of, GBP and team GGG were even allowed to approve a pool of judges. They saw what everyone else did; a close, competitive fight and scored it exactly that way.
Golovkin landed more punches and therefore should have won the fight.
If landed punches were the difference between winning or losing a boxing match, we would have an incredibly different and less interesting sport. Clean punching, ring generalship, effective aggressiveness and defense are what the judges are looking for in determining the winner of a round. I’m obviously a promoter, but in the four areas that actually count in judging, I can’t find one where GGG was the victor.
Tom Loeffler’s statement that he doesn’t know if Golvokin can win a decision in Las Vegas.
Perhaps Tom is just looking to make GGG feel better, but regardless this is maybe the most disappointing comment, because it comes from someone who knows the sport. Of course, GGG can win a decision in Vegas. But 22,000 people aren’t going to crowd into the T-Mobile to watch Golovkin fight and blast out the likes of Dominic Wade, Willie Monroe, Jr., or Vanes Martirosyan. He is going to need to fight a higher level of competition – and then fight better than that opponent – to earn a victory in the mecca of boxing.
Boxing is a wonderful sport that is coming back thanks to streaming technology and growing international interest. But it is a sport that also faces competition, not only from the outside in the form of other, more-widely watched leagues, but from inside where the fractured nature of boxing has made it tougher and tougher for the best to face the best.
Just look at celebrity row to see how special Saturday night was. There, another best-in-sport athlete, Lebron James, joined Will Smith, Mark Wahlberg and a huge group of other A-list celebrities to witness something special.
While everyone is entitled to his or her opinion (especially in boxing), let’s take a moment to appreciate what Canelo and GGG gave us on Saturday night and work towards doing it more often for the sake of the sport we all love so much.
Thoughts?

he`s a lying piece of work, who couldn´t come up with one sentence half as long as the ones used in that letter if his live was depending on it, doesn´t change the fact that the judges were paid off to deliver a scorecard in goldenboy`s favor. obvious corruption on the top level of the world´s most obvious corrupt sport. you can´t even blame the guy, guess if it was my enterprise and millions of dollars at risk depending on the outcome of the fights, i would fix em too, who can say he wouldn´t. everybody does it. i personally just never liked him, that´s it, maybe he is a nice guy, just never could stand his smug face! he shouldn´t take it personally, i also can´t stand his special people`s VIP-club, le bron, will smith and marky mark, not a bit. off kilter megalomaniacal, triumphalist, a-list a-holes. and again, nothing personal, don´t know them, maybe nice guys around their own kids, just what i see and hear from them outside the court or moviescreen makes me gag! almost gag, o.k! but they make me slightly feel sick in the stomach fo sure.

I'm sure they aren't paid off, it's way more subtle than that. Golden Boy no doubt has traction with the Nevada commission who appoint the judges. If you are a judge and you want to get regular appointments you know that the best way to ensure this is not to do anything to piss off those that butter your bread.
One sure fire way to piss them off would be to score against the house-fighter and while you may get away with it now and again if you're established as someone they can trust, you don't want to rock the boat too often or you'll find your appointments getting fewer and further between. Better still don't take the chance, score it a draw if you feel your conscience troubling you, and with luck the other two will still ensure the right result.

This is brilliant. Made my day.
Alvarez spent years demolishing guys who weighed 15 pounds less than he did on fight night. He got pushed to the front of the queue to fight Mayweather and all of that money and exposure it got him. He's been on the right end of every close decision he's been involved in. Judges in his promoter's pocket. He failed a drugs test twice but was still allowed right back in to the top. The majority of boxing fans and experts believe Golovkin beat him both times. When he gets cut he doesn't even bleed.
But none of this is enough... De La hoya wants you to love him too.

Exactly. He also got to go into the record books as someone who held Mayweather to a majority decision despite probably not winning a ten-second period of any round.

i had canelo fighting a gutsy performance
and landing a close win against an ageing
opponent. so i am very much with oscar.
and yet, if all these noble thoughts about
boxing are true, why did it take you so long
to fight the one man that had been the
logical opponent for your golden cow for
so very long?
you waited until the best middleweight
became beatable. so spare us the noble
speech. even if you did not pay off judges,
you were in the driving seat of twisting this
result.

Agree with this. It’s karma. I really don’t think golden boy appreciated the impact of social media. That Canelo would be shamed so vigorously with his avoidance tactics and Oscar letting this fight ‘marinate’ bs. Then when the fight actually happened that people would so vigorously protest the results and tactics. It’s gotten to Oscar most likely has gotten to Canelo.
But this is what happens. Canelo just edged a victory over an 36 year old golovkin when this fight could have happened in 2015. The Great performance by Canelo is overshadowed.

The cartel gambled everything on Canelo finishing upright (a more convincing GGG win would have been scored a draw - GGG knocking Canelo out a $$ disaster!) made considerable financial concessions to GGG to get the belts etc but what they really want is to make Canelo a Mayweather proportion investment. A large Mexican fanbase is not enough, they want Canelo to be Ali famous. Not happening Oscar. Biggest Canelo fight is still GGG3. So get on it.
Naturally, the online backlash is pissing them off. Combined with the lukewarm media congratulations to Canelo, it takes the shine off their investment. The projected financial targets will not be met.
Tom Loeffler is just being naughty, he knew fully well what they up against - knockout or bust. Las Vegas knew the odds against that to a 10th decimal place. But the money spoke loudest. Instead of being a great advert for Las Vegas, its had the opposite effect.
So they send the mouthpiece to speak out but who else did have they have? Mauricio Sulaiman?

Canelo is good, but not great. However, the fights he won over Golovkin, Lara, etc. because of biased judging give him the status of a top pound for pound boxer that De La Hoya wants. It reminds me of Zsolt Erdei when he was considered top 10 pound for pound. Erdei got the benefit of biased judging and the same for Canelo.

I think Canelos better than just good. Hes a pound for pound top boxer now. Very strong skill wise and very strong physically. However he has been a work in progress.
Oscar though has ruined his image. Canelo is ridiculed. Long before the clenbuterol, that was the cherry on the top. He’s been a weight bully seemingly all his career when he had the skill to compete if not defeat the best of the middleweight division barring ggg.
What rescues Canelo is a third golovkin fight where he dominates or Kos golovkin two things he’s failed to do with two opportunities. He would also need to beat someone with hype such as a charlo and or Saunders spectacularly. Canelo cannot rest on his laurels if he’s after public adoration.

I doubt he will fight GGG again, so after Lemieux, he needs to fight one of these:
- Jacobs vs Derevo winner
- BJS vs Andrade winner
- Charlo
or he will keep getting negative feedbacks from fans and media.

In my opinion yes. Someone with hype and in their prime. I personally respect his boxing skills. Right now I think he's the best in the middleweight division and those names, he can beat. I assume the general public don't and won't until he makes another statement. Up to him then. He's always had the power of choice as he's the A side and a big time A side. If he wants to focus on other things then I expect people won't be happy. Of course I wouldn't be pleased myself because I want to see the best fight the best however gotta make some concessions but not Amir Kahn and Liam Smith concessions.

Lol @ DLH.
If he's going to let social media bother him perhaps he should consider jumping off a cliff.
Social media only has a few uses and the most prominent is spreading hatred and intolerance.
Don't get caught up in that part of it Oscar. Use social media for advertising/promoting and ignore the rest.
